[OC] Summer olympics: a history of participation

  1. Big drop in 1976 Olympics’ participation is due to a bulk of African countries boycotting because of IOC refusing to ban New Zealand. It had to do with NZ’s rugby team touring the apartheid South Africa.

    The 1980 one is due to the games being held in Moscow – the US led a large boycott to protest the Soviet’s invasion of Afghanistan.

    These two, I was already somewhat familiar with. What I’m a bit surprised with is the subsequent 1984 game held in LA. This one faced the Soviet and Eastern Bloc’s boycott stemming from the previous game’s boycott, yet it seems the country count wasn’t *that* dramatic.
