With Ukrainian infantry facing Russians near Toretsk

Kyiv Independent reporter Francis Farrell and videographer Olena Zashko spent a day with Ukrainian soldiers at infantry positions near Toretsk in Donetsk Oblast. They hold the last positions before no man’s land: the gray zone between warring sides, where any movement makes you a target. Just 150 meters across the uneven ground, in positions that likely look very similar, are Russian soldiers.

Do you have questions about Russia’s war in Ukraine and what it’s like to report on it?
You have a chance to get them answered by our journalist, Francis Farrell, who has reported from some of the hottest spots along the front line, including Bakhmut, Chasiv Yar, Avdiivka, and Vovchansk, since 2022. He has recently returned from the east, where he visited Ukrainian positions near Toretsk, one of the major goals of Russia’s recent push in Donetsk Oblast. On Wednesday, Francis will react to our viewers’ questions in a new video, so write your questions in the comments below.

  2. Beautiful, brave reporting…..It makes me truly weep to see the sacrifice and heroism of these men truly in the midst of a bloody hell on earth. God bless and keep all of you strong and safe.💜☮✝☮💜

  3. We need to stop funding this terrible conflict proxy war for NUTO / US, they are just killing Slavs and creating debt for Ukraine with all the expensive junk they are 'giving' them!
zelensky is just a zion puppet and ego maniac.

  4. It's pretty heartbreaking hearing that soldier speaking with so much pathos. I can really feel his dispar viscerally. It's especially cruel that this fate has been thrust on him because of politicians and people who are greasing their wallets, to whom this is all a game.

  5. Kiev's junta let's the soldiers use their smart phones on the line. Russia not. You can see the difference between a professional army and a binch of banderist terrorists.

  6. A great piece of journalism… I lived through such harrowing times here. The drones are the worst… But now there are also KAB bombs. War is hell, but the infantry will pay your cost… Until Valhalla!

  7. Tho its hard to detect a drone by radar or visually whey not have listening devices , enhanced electrinically ??

The Uk in WW2 used listening devices to detect the V1 placed on the coast as early warnings .

  8. I have a question. Could you give an accurate account of Ukranian casualties? Don’t need that bogus figure told by zelinsky.

  9. I can not imagine the amount of power you need to work all day digging, build a home, fight for your life and all this in hard life conditions. My thoughts are with you tonight.

  10. How donyou get to fromt lines to report when Ukraine has banned journalists from being inbedded !?

Also they cant win this no matter what old crap the west gives them.
Its a terrible shame what the war machine will do to a nation for profit!

  11. Everyone laughed at russian diplomatic ultimatum to have assurance that nato will not be present in Ukraine. It was ignored. West decided not to waste the ink and paper. Instead Ukraine, and Russia spill their blood.
