Russia is saving its planes in Ukraine for a future war with NATO

Russia is saving its air force and not throwing it into the meat grinder of the war in Ukraine as zealously as it is doing with its ground forces. The Kremlin is probably saving this resource for a future war against NATO, say experts interviewed by Business Insider.

John Baum, an air power expert at the Mitchell Institute and a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, noted that the Russians “could bring more sophisticated aircraft to the fight, but they just haven’t done it yet.”

In particular, Russia has not yet used its modern Su-57 aircraft, which is positioned by the Kremlin as an analogue of the American F-35, in active operations. According to known information, this aircraft has only launched missiles from Russian territory several times, but has not flown into Ukrainian airspace. This is despite the fact that this aircraft, according to its concept, should operate in enemy airspace – that is why it is positioned as “invisible”.

“Russia uses a lot of its air power. But you don’t see a lot of Russian air power over Ukraine,” said Andrew Curtis, an independent defence researcher and former Royal Air Force officer.

He stressed that Russia uses the Su-57 in a way that is “risk-free.” In his view, “the reason for this is simply that they want to make sure that they maintain a credible, modern air force for any future operations that they may want to conduct.”

“And that in itself is quite significant because it shows that at least someone in the Kremlin is thinking about more than just Ukraine,” Curtis said.

Michael Clarke, a Russia and Ukraine expert and Britain’s national security adviser, said Russia was to some extent sacrificing the effectiveness of its forces in Ukraine to preserve vital assets for a possible future conflict.

“If the Russians were throwing everything they had at Ukraine, they would probably be in a stronger, better position than they are now,” he said.

Clark noted that Russia is protecting its aircraft because it understands that if it gets too deeply stuck in Ukraine, there will be nothing left “if it comes to some kind of conflict with NATO.”

The top U.S. commander in Europe, General Christopher Cavoli, told Congress in April that Russia had lost only about 10 percent of its air force in Ukraine. That means it still has plenty left in its air force arsenal.

Peter Leighton, a fellow at the Griffith Asia Institute and a former Royal Australian Air Force officer, said Russia could well have a future NATO conflict in mind when making decisions today.

For example, Russia might believe that in a war with NATO, its air force could “survive long enough to withstand some NATO air strikes and help protect Russian ground forces in the short term.” Such a plan would require not squandering assets in Ukraine.

  1. They cannot make it against Ukraine, a navy-less and air-less opponent 😂. They fabtasize even getting into a war with us? 😅 They are amazingly stupid and hilarious 😂 in this russian circus.

  2. I see a lot of Joe Biden’s kids talking shit 💩 about Russian planes! 😂😂😂 or this is a Democrats party You Tube channel?!🇺🇸 🌈 😂😂😂

  3. If Rus commits their jets to UKR war and promptly lose them all to a couple flights of 40 year old F-16's, convincing anyone to buy their substandard missile-bait aircraft will be difficult. "We were saving them for 'the real war with NATO'" is only a hedge so after they withdraw from UKR they can scrounge up some cash in military exports to countries that aren't aligned with US/NATO and can't afford anything better from non-NATO countries. And if they want some of this smoke, they know exactly what's going to happen to them.

  4. Why would they think saving older airframes near the end of their life is a good idea. They wouldn’t stand a chance against NATO anyway. They will be broke and cut off from western technologies so building a meaningful number of newer planes won’t work either, Putin has ensured a bleak future for Russia.

  5. Nah. They don't want to show that the 57's stealth capabilities are simply sup-bar. They also lack properly trained pilots to fly their existing fleet in greater numbers. In other words, they are spent.

  6. Perhaps they don't want to show their capabilities and drawbacks to NATO.
What is an air force good for if it lacks an army? The Russian Army is heavily weakened by this war of attrition. Only China could help them.

  7. The only reason russafraid air force is preserving their prehistoric airflooded fleet is to possibly try to escort the clandestine evasion ( ejection ) of vladimir to turkumenistan air space were his "trone" can be safely ejected with some of the jewels of the queen he could afford to hide under his pants…

NATO is playing the exaustion game since day one of the conflict, and every month that russiafraid is put onto total war economy will surely render a retarded effect of many decades of complete russian decline mountain down directly to ground…

Russiafraid knows it will NEVER MORE have sufficient techonology to produce its own planes, and the bugged ones china may sell at a very high cost there may be not enough cash to pay for, if russiafraid continues to dedicate 30 to 40% of their gross economy production solely to militar level expenses…

Russiafraid has been with both feed flooded at ukranian soil and do not know how to leave out with some remaining dignity…

The occident and NATO game has been to exhaust the enemy till no more, since its much easier for a final stroke to a completely debilitaded opponent…

The world is seeing russia struggling to take their foot out of ukraine, without knowing a way to do so and do not soar as having lost the battle…

Appart from the much superior quality of NATO pilots and planes, which russiafraid do not have anymore, there is the question of how much more airfleet power does NATO have in absolute total number at its disposal in contrast with the remaining pterodactiles russiafraid still have…

Its an already LOST WAR for russiafraid, and some of them are already Very Afraid of WHEN the long waited capitulation day will turn into REALITY !
