Ukraine is surviving – here’s what it needs to defeat Russia | Defence in Depth

This absence of a clear objective has led to a muddled policy of arming Ukraine with enough to survive, but not enough to win. As things stand, therefore, a prolonged bloody stalemate – or the slow, attritional defeat of Ukraine – seems the conflict’s most likely outcome.

But let’s imagine we did want Ukraine to win, and win decisively. What would it need?

  3. Very important to point out by The Telegraph.

    However with munitions I don't know how that gets done without the US this decade. Those factories take a long, long time to stand up, get the workforce up to scratch, and then finally start making deliveries. Does anyone in Europe have the DIB to get even close to the USA?

  5. Due to the fact ATACMS , SCALP and STORM SHADOW target data is programmed by respective owners of these (us,fr,uk) any attack on russian territory is considered a war. Noone will give ukranians a software to put the targets themselves. In case of such attack Russia can supply anti ship missiles to any party that hates US,UK or France and the ships will be drowned down quickly. Or long range weapons capable of striking overseas bases of these countries . So it will never happen. They are too scared of this.

  6. This war is being used by the west to weaken Russia at the expense of Ukraine.
    To win this war the west must send its soldiers to fight in Ukraine as Ukrainian soldiers will never be able to defeat Russia.
    Or the west can stop sending weapons to Ukraine and push for peaceful settlement of the conflict addressing Russias concern.
    Otherwise Russia will fight this war until it wins however long it may take

  20. Thanks for your excellent analysis as always. The answers are clear, the political will is not. And how much of Moscow’s disinformation and asymmetric warfare is the cause of that lack of political will. It is obvious that Putin only needs one useful idiot in Europe (Orban) and one in the US (Trump) to undermine consensus and willingness to act. Please keep up the excellent work of bringing clarity on this awful war of aggression.

  21. remember the country invade by Russia example GEORGIA, what western country do? all talks no action. Just flexing military power still cant stop RUSSIA.

    They called themselves as "FREECOUNTRY, DEMOCRACY COUNTRY and CIVILIZED COUNTRY" but cant stop RUSSIA, and even China invasion of TIBET, still "WESTERN COUNTRY" cant stop invader all just talk Hypocrisy

  26. What the west doesn't want to admit is that it's weapons are not invincible, and Russia is out fighting Ukraine as well as out thinking the west.

    The war is not a stalemate. Russia is winning, advancing faster than before. Ukraine is desperate for me.

  29. Does anyone really think that at some stage Putin is going to pull all his troops back and stop the bombardment of Ukraine allowing Ukraine to declare a victory? It just will not happen. Russia in the past defeated two of the worlds greatest leaders – Napoleon and Hitler – and the war will continue until Zelensky capitulates or Putin is replaced, or Putin and Zelensky reach a compromise and a cease-fire.
