Japanese “Welcome” signage at Greenwich Station

Took the Thameslink train and saw this sign at the edge of the station platform (Platform 2/3 towards Central London). The signage looks very faded compared to other signs, and it contains “ようこそ” (which means Welcome in Japanese). Tried to google to find some info but didn’t manage, anyone knows anything?

  1. That has to be a very old sign. The DLR logo with DOCKLANDS ᴸᴵᴳᴴᵀ ᴿᴬᴵᴸ written in a box hasn’t been used for donkey’s years. [Apparently](https://logos.fandom.com/wiki/Docklands_Light_Railway) it was discontinued in 2002, which means it probably dates from the opening of the Lewisham extension in 1999.

So I guess you want to be looking at a connexion between Greenwich and Japan around the millennium.

  2. Looks interesting! Could be worth sharing on r/LondonUnderground to see if anyone there knows the story behind it

  3. I’d love to know! We have cherry blossom trees in my area of Greenwich donated by the Japanese Government.
