This was the hardest moment of the Olympics to watch. Absolutely devastating as she was clearly dominating the game. She gets up from a clear ACL injury and tries to keep playing before collapsing. She refuses the wheelchair off the court and the whole audience was on their feet.

  1. As a Chinese, I absolutely feel devastated for her. She was clearly the better player this match.

Edit: It’s been brought to my attention how Marin celebrated needlessly against her injured opponent Chinese player Li Xuerui in 2016. Watching that clip left quite the bad taste in my mouth. I commend He Bingjiao’s show of compassion and sportsmanship today.

Although I would’ve still preferred a fair match without injuries, I can’t say I’m as devastated for Marin as I was before.

  2. As someone who is entirely unbiased this is such a heartbreaking moment. She was in the driver’s seat the entire game and lost any chance at a medal due to a bad jump. Absolutely devastating.

  3. The finals between her and ASY would be amazing.

So sad for her. She just knew the moment she felt the pain, it’s over

  4. She was in control of the match and looked like she would at least win silver. But her knee went out in the semis.. brutal

  5. Wow I’m sorry to hear that! I hope she recovers well.

Side note: if Marin has retired due to injury, is there a bronze medal match or has Tunjung won bronze for Indonesia?

  6. Es una campeona.
Lo ha intentado y ha conseguido llegar muy lejos a pesar de la lesión. No sé podía saber si su recuperación era completa sin intentarlo. Su valentía le ha otorgado muchos logros. Espero que se recupere pronto.

  7. she’s about to win this game…. OMG!suddenly things went wrong 😭 i almost cry either !

  8. That’s definitely sad for her, if she had won gold she would have definitely been the goat of women’s single without really any debate but although she still has a good goat argument it is by no means unanimous like lin Dan for man’s single

  9. I really hate to say this as even though I she has shows unsportsmanship I really loved her playstyle.

I really hope i’m wrong but i’m afraid this was her last match in badminton period. This is the third time this has happened, i really do Hope she recovers but the future as a game maker in this sport seems grim 😔

Ps. I think the long hug between bingjiao and Marin was very sweet and a good show of sportsmanship

  10. You should see Marin’s reaction to her opponent Li Xuerui at the Rio Olympics SF, and her celebration for winning the match.

    The match is on youtube:
    https://youtube.com/watch?v=9FUx2Guu_zM

    Injury at 52:00
the time stamp for the celebration is 57:17 onwards.

    Ps: look at the comments.

Edit: I love the downvotes. Keep them coming. DELUSION is a hell of a thing.

  11. Respects to Marin. Her approaches to the game may not be favourable for fans, but the fighting spirits and unique style (in women’s badminton) are immensely respectable.

  12. She deserve it after what she said to Li Xuerui in Rio.

The world’s most unsportsmanlike badminton player got her comeuppance today

  13. My heart is broken. She has fought so far after missing Tokio and several tournaments. I think this could have been her second gold. Anyways she has made history in a sport that is almost non existent in our continent. I am thankful to witness this legend.

  14. Glad to see He Bingjao show sportsmanship and sympathy. This reminds me of 2016 SF when the same thing happened, but Marin celebrated in front of her opponent’s face instead.

    Karma’s a bitch.

  15. It would be funny if someone edited her celebrations in 2016 against an injured Li Xueru but swap the opponent to herself.

  16. Look i get she’s a prick but like let’s not celebrate a pretty serious injury no matter how much of a prick they are. It’s pretty toxic tbh

  17. I posted this not knowing too much about badminton and just having watched it at this Olympics. Seems that Marin is a controversial player but the people celebrating her injury in the comments because of her past actions seem to not quite understand irony.

  18. Sorry for Carolina, she’s a fantastic athlete and competitor, and this is heartbreaking for her and her fans!

Although, she has been quite aggressive and disrespectful towards her Chinese and Indian opponents in the past, we in Asia believe in forgiveness. She deserved to have made it to the finals today!

  19. the astonishing fact is she got karma against the same nation i.e china whether its 2016 or 2024

  20. Will throw in my two cents as someone completely unknowledgeable about professional badminton outside of the Olympics, so I don’t know anything about what kinds of players they are.

Watching both this replay as well as the replay from Rio 2016, in both circumstances it’s just heartbreaking to see the injury occur. Not sure if it’s the same caster, too, for the US stream. (they sound the same) While Marin was a bit tactless in the 2016 games I can understand being excited being elevated to the finals and having that adrenaline carry you over and having a bit of a needless celebration, and while it’s no excuse she doesn’t deserve to have her career basically ruined as retribution.

It can be “karmic” while also being a horrible thing to happen to somebody. She was excited she got to the finals in 2016, and now with a third ACL injury her career might be over. That’s what she dedicated the entire first half of her life to, down the drain after she thought she recovered.

  21. I was really impressed that China’s He Bing Jiao had immediately dropped her guard out of concern for Marin before the shuttlecock hit the net.
