The PSNI has launched an investigation after a number of riot police officers were seen wearing badges that are allegedly linked to right wing American militias.
The riot officers were pictured with the badges on the back on their uniforms at protests in a number of locations in Belfast on Saturday, August 3, with images circulating on social media.
It has been claimed that the Spartan Helmet badges are similar to those worn by American right wing anti-government militia groups known as Three Percenters.
The helmet badges worn by the militia groups has the Roman numerals for three in the forehead region, with the police officers pictured also having the numerals on their emblems.
The PSNI has said that officers are required to wear uniforms and approved equipment that are in line with its uniform standards policy, which does not allow for the wearing of badges of emblems other than those permitted in the policy.
The force has said that it is aware of the images that are circulating online and that an investigation into them has been launched.
A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police officers are at all times required to wear uniform and approved equipment in accordance with the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Uniform Standards Policy that is kept under review.
“This policy does not allow for the wearing of badges or emblems save those permitted in the guidance which provides direction with regards to the wearing of items of uniform, such as, the display of names badges, emblems and numerals.
“We are aware of images circulating on social media following last night’s disorder in Belfast and we are making enquiries. As such, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
