  1. I know martial sports are controversial but I feel the Olympics should have more martial sports.

    The winners tend to be more diverse and often from smaller countries or no country, as in this case.

    Probably because it doesn’t take much to setup a dojo. So I hope the IOC will let in more martial sports soon!

  2. That is awesome!!! I was rooting for someone on the team to get a medal – congratulations Cindy <3

  3. Even if she beat a French boxer, I’m still happy it was against the refugee team. Hopefully it will give motivation to other refugees to compete and may she get gold while she’s still in contention for a title.

  4. This is what the Olympics are all about. Heroic stories of against-all-odds determination, skill, and opportunities to compete with one’s whole heart.

    I cannot imagine what they have had to go through to get to this spot, and what greets them once they leave Paris. But I hope for these moments in France, they are able to enjoy themselves, breathe freely and deeply, meet some interesting new people, and replenish their strength to continue on to a brighter future.

    {Does the Olympics make anyone else incredibly saccharine and overly emotional…the entire duration of the games?!?}

  5. Love to see this! You can tell how much this means to her!

    Question: since she is representing the Refugee Olympic Team, what national anthem is played if she wins gold? Is it the Olympic anthem, or the anthem of her host IOC?

  6. Great to see. Imagine hating gay people so much you chase away Olympic medalists. Bigotry is insane.

  7. So first St Lucia. Then Cabo Verde. (ed) *Then Dominica*. And now the Refugee team.

    Nice Olympics for first medals.

  8. Love these feel good stories. Well deserved history making performance. They better make a biopic. I wish there were more sports biopics.

  9. The Refugee team is one of the best ideas I’ve ever seen. I love it. My only objection is that in a perfect world, a refugee team would’ve never been needed.

  10. What an incredible honor for herself, her family and her people…amazing dedication and spirit. 🏆🏆🏆

  11. It makes me emotional when I see winners cry after all the hard work and discipline they put in. It’s so inspirational.

  12. Cindy Ngamba Will get gold. She’s the best in her class.

    Refugee from Cameroon, moved to the UK as a child. She lives in Bolton in Great Britain and can’t return to Cameroon due to her sexuality. She’s been caught up in ridiculous paperwork to gain UK citizenship despite living here for 13 years. Trains with GB team but can’t fly the flag due to bureaucracy.

    Legend.
