  1. > Romania’s Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said Tuesday that he will boycott the Paris Olympics ’ closing ceremony due to a “scandalous situation” that cost a Romanian gymnast a bronze medal.

    > **Ana Barbosu had already begun celebrating her bronze for the floor event Monday when coaches for American Jordan Chiles entered an appeal to judges over Chiles’ score. The inquiry result in a 0.1 boost for Chiles, enough to overtake Barbosu for the last spot on the Olympic podium.**

    > “I decided not to attend the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics, following the scandalous situation in the gymnastics, where our athletes were treated in an absolutely dishonorable manner,” Ciolacu said in a Facebook post. “To withdraw a medal earned for honest work on the basis of an appeal … is totally unacceptable!”

  2. It was a very unfortunate situation and I’ve a lot of sympathy for her, but this is just a nonsense decision.

  3. dw, we’re gonna send our tourist president, with another luxury jet chartered for a modest 500k $$ …

  4. I mean, I think the boycott makes sense but for several reasons and not the one he mentioned. The entire floor final was a jury shitshow:

First, they reject Sabrina Voinea’s inquiry (and now it seems her appeal was correct).

Then they accept Jordan Chiles’ inquiry (another controversy, since it seems the element in question was actually performed incompletely…).

Then they announce the standings without being clear that an inquiry was made (if you watch the stream, you notice that Ana Bărbosu doesn’t react to Jordan Chiles’ grade until they announce the standings officially).

    Major screw up!
