The italian commentator actually said “and here’s the athlete from Iran.. but I will call him Mario to make it easier”
Be happy people from Madagascar are not that strong at the Olympics. Once I got lost in a family name and tbh I think I’m still lost in there. 😅😜
He has definitely spelled his own name wrong at various points in his life.
It’s long but if you do it in segments it isn’t really hard
“agha, mirza, eijen, aghard.”
Anyone got commentary of them?
Dudes got a whole haiku in his surname.
Writing that in cursive is gonna be a chore
Cat got on the keyboard in the broadcast truck again
as an iranian! that’s a really hard last name but that’s two part last name, the name is “Ali Aghamirzaei hejnaghard” and usually they write it like: “Ali Aghamirzaei” and skip the last part
No one in this country can ever pronounce my name right. It’s not that hard: Na-ghee-na-na-jar. Nagheenanajar.
His nickname is Gregory….and he works for NAVSTAR when not training….
“Mr. Alphabet”
For people with incredibly long names like this, I always wonder how long did it take them to learn to spell their names as kids
Reminds me of Samir Nagheenanajar
Didn’t he used to work at Initech?
He calls himself “Allan” in English. I did have a ton of Persian friends who all had names like “Bobby” or “Sam” and it was only when I met their parents that I realize that they were just their english names
My man has the name of a demon from a fantasy rpg
Does anyone know phonetically it would be pronounced/written
AghamirzaeijenagHARDER
Average Iranian last name
“Na-ghee-na-na-jar. Nagheenanajar. Is not that difficult.”
There was a runner in the women’s 400m qualifications named [Ella Onojuvwevwo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ella_Onojuvwevwo), and the commentators on TV kept having such a hard time pronouncing her surname, lol.
Alphabet soup
His surname has HARD in it, so..
thisgoesHARD
This reminds me. I watch a lot of videos online and I see so most native English speakers trying to pronounce foreign words so incorrectly. I don’t even mean grammar, just simply saying the letters in the right order. Looking at this they would give up and not even try, whereas I could say his last name whole way through first time easily. It doesn’t have to be words this long either. It makes everyone else look dyslexic to me. I’m Finnish, and in my language almost everything is pronounced exactly as is written. I assume that’s the reason for this but it’s still strange to me

I think the Australian golfer Minjee Lee is my personal favourite.
Cannot imagine how hard it must have been for him to learn to spell his surname correctly as a kid!
You can hear him say his own name on the audio button on his olympic profile.
He says it Ali Agamirzai. Easy enough. As mentioned by other Iranians the other names are his other names and somehow combined into one name rather than be split up.
I thought only Greece had the last longest names
No sir, you will be called AJ from this point on.
That’s like a Samsung TV model name.
true persian must have end of his surname with zadeh :D.
Don’t repeat it three times while outside a circle of salt

Would already take forever to fill in their name on an exam
*They’re taking the Hobbits to Aghamirzaeijenaghrad*
They ran his [surnames](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ali_Aghamirzaei) together for some reason
The name’s Ali
Ali Aghamirzaeijenaghard

The H is silent. So it’s not that bad
call me by your surname
For most athletes, there is a recording of them saying their own name on their profile on the official website. [Unfortunately, Ali shortened his last name. ](https://olympics.com/en/paris-2024/athlete/ali-aghamirzaeijenaghard_1536996)
Well I can see how they needed to include Hard in there.
There was a swimmer (I forget which country) also with a very long last name, and the commentator said it while introducing her it was impressive.
Reminds me of the HK sprinter in this Olympics, Felix Diu. ‘Diu’ means ‘fuck’ in Cantonese 😅
Someone please post the medal ceremony I wanna hear them say his name if he wins
aga-mirzae-jenna-gard
same syllables as something like:
merriweather-fossington
