How might UK-EU relations change with Starmer as prime minister? • FRANCE 24 English

Labour leader Keir Starmer on Friday swept into Downing Street as UK prime minister, ending 14 years of rule by Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives. But unlike with the last election in 2019, there was almost no discussion of Brexit during the campaign. Why did Labour in particular avoid talking about the issue? And what consequences might Starmer’s election victory have for the country’s future relations with the EU? FRANCE 24’s Caroline Clarkson tells us more.

  1. lets face it the EU are a super power its meant to be a place of trade now its a thing that is anti democracy and for elite people soros to control the world

  2. Can the UK public trust the EU since it's mask slipped after the democratic majority of the UK voted for sovereignty, independence from a corrupt, anti democratic, unaccountable, declining, protectionist, mafioso organisation run by a bunch of childish, vindictive, self serving, gravy train riding, free loading parasites. Leaving was about self governance, empowering the UK to make its own decisions. It does not set in stone what those decisions must be, it's back in the hands of the UK public and not in the hands of or shackled to Brussels.

  3. Starmer and Labour has accepted Brexit. Any attempt to rejoin would be political suicidal. Labour’s support at this election is thin and based on borrowed votes, even I lent them my vote lot get the Tories out. Tbh doubt the EU is going to last anyway.

  4. The UK has to deal with it's bigoted anti-immigrant large minority, and show that it is able to control them before it can be trusted with the reward of Freedom of Movement. There is little sign that this is being dealt with by Labour. A missed opportunity.

  5. Labour should publish a booklet explaining what the EU is, what leaving it has cost us and what we stand to gain by rejoining. This booklet should be sent to every household and then another referendum should be held.

  6. The trade deal does not come up for renewal next year. The implementation of the deal is up for review.
The four freedoms are indivisible, and central elements of the EU Single Market.

  7. Labours ambitions all rest on growth rather than increased taxes to fix-reinvest in service etc. That means trade has to improve. If we are not changing how we trade and the current Brexit deal then they are doomed to fail….I am not saying we rejoin… but the current deal is the harshest we could have picked. A Norway style deal still satisfies the brexit vote and changes things. There are others…

  8. "A pessimist is a well-informed realist" and the vital signals UK sends us are very worrying (much to the delight of Putin, who is the puppet master behind, both, Brexit and its traitor elite who carried it out)! Firstly, nothing is going to change with Labour Party in UK… NOTHING (Believe me)! Due to Brexit is an aggressive TERMINAL cancer on the British economy (we haven't seen the worst of Brexit yet!), which will destroy UK as we knew it… FOREVER! What we Europeans are going to witness in horror from our side of the Channel is a long and horrendous period of British decline, which will be the seed of the destruction of UK in the medium term (neither Scotland nor Northern Ireland are going to be content to be dragged into that spiral of death and foretold decay)

  9. It makes a start on improving the relationship between Britain and the EU. But it will require more than that! And some other steps between that and a full return to Europe will have to be undertaken.

In an ideal world or Britain, we'd be calling for a full investigation through a Royal Commission! However, there's a problem with that! It would demand a unanaminous agreement with all the parties in the House of Commons to secure that. Both the Conservatives ( Under the dubious, potential leadership of Braverman) and Nigel Farage of Reform UK – for separate reasons would not agree with that! So the next best way is an audit of how the process of Brexit was so badly handled! That will not need the full agreement of all the Parties only a voted agreement of more than 450 in a straight vote to do so! So an Audit of the Brexit matter is the only way to reach out to conclusions.

Labour was probably correct to stay out of the notion of any rapid return to Europe after the result of this general election! There is a lot of repair work to do to the structure of the British Isles. However, some measures can be taken to undo the relationship damage between us and the EU – The Brexit Audit will assist with that and is a necessary first step. It also will make those who voted for Brexit think again! Though trust will be difficult in the very long term to restore! Our neighbours in Europe will be wary of us! This audit will begin to rebalance it. But it's still going to take several decades at least. There's nothing easy with that!
