It is a hawk moth, but it’s a poplar hawk moth, not an elephant hawk moth.
Actually, it could also be a lime hawk moth. They are very similar caterpillars.
Elephant hawk moth caterpillars are brown and sort of resemble an elephant’s trunk.

I’d say it’s a lime hawk moth
I saw one of these in the garden when I was little. My mum said it was an alien and I believed her for so long.
