Russia-Ukraine: Kursk residents evacuate under Ukrainian cross-border attack

Russian forces battled Ukrainian troops for a third day on Thursday, after Ukraine smashed through the border in the Kursk region and forced Moscow to call in reserves.

In one of the biggest Ukrainian attacks on Russia of the two-year-old war, around 1,000 Ukrainian troops rammed through the Russian border in the early hours of Aug. 6 with tanks and armoured vehicles, covered in the air by swarms of drones and pounding artillery, according to Russian officials.

Speaking from Ukraine on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the Ukrainian army for its ability “to surprise” and achieve results. “Our soldiers not only withstood the overwhelming force of the occupiers, but also are destroying it in the way necessary to protect Ukraine — our state and independence,” Zelenskyy said.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Kursk region acting governor Alexei Smirnov told Russian President Vladimir Putin via a video link call that local residents were being evacuated by buses and rail. “We transported people to a safe distance, and from there we organized evacuation by large-capacity buses,” Smirnov said.

  1. They realize all they have done is play right into Putin's hands. This is only going to make Russians flock to Military recruitment and take more of Ukraine. Also, I thought they said they didn't want Russia's land. This makes them look like complete hypocrites.

  2. PP Conservatives have prioritized their wacko "axe the tax" scam over unequivocal support for Ukraine in its hour of need. The 1.4 million CDNs of Ukrainian descent and 200,000+ Ukrainian refugees currently in Canada – have taken note!

  4. damn this had an ominous tone, it seems like ukraine did this without telling the US due to being salty about the prisoner exchange and also as a PR move. RIP more civilans.

  5. 2 days ago Ukrainian troops (1000 people) crossed the border and atacked the Kursk oblast, not the Kursk-city which is lokated almost 200 km away.
Today Ukrainian troops are trying to take the town Sydzha with no success.
Air forces and artillery of RF targeted almost 500 intruders.
The rest of the Ukrainian troops had been stopped 20 km away from the Russian border in the fields.
The same happend in Belgorid a year ago when intruders were pushed away and the part of Kharkiv oblast was taken by Russians to create the buffer zone.

  6. clowns just walking into collapsible defence.. ambush coming.. walking into an artillery pocket. taking over abandoned towns didnt even give them pause to wonder why are they letting us move so easy ? this is how Russia demilitarises NATO

  7. The KPR Kursk People's Republic have spoken. Already 95% have voted for independence in the referendum which was overseen by the Ukrainian government. The Special liberation operation is going as planned.

  8. When was the last time the United States was invaded and had land taken? This is embarrassing for Russia…..

I don't remember Afghanistan Taliban taking towns and fields in Alabama…..

  9. Putin cares nothing about ussian losses, he won't talk about them until it happens in Kursk. Ruzzian losses to date:
Putin got here after loosing hardly anything important – in his mind:

    586,370 men

    16,323 armored vehicles

    8,429 tanks

    16,451 artilery

    365 aircraft

    326 helicopters

    28 ships

  10. A pr stunt meant to convince the simpletons that ukraine has a chance to win the war..reminds me of the battle of the bulge

  11. Imagine americans evacuating after a hostile country invaded one of its territories. Why this happened in Russia. After years of preparation the west is now challenging putin. They want him to make a wrong decision about the war that will lead to its ouster. The US has pentagon while Putin only had a mile long table.
