BREAKING: TAS/CAS Rejects US Artistic Gymnastics Request to Reopen Jordan Chiles’ Late Inquiry Ruling (Google Translation)

  1. Reposting my thoughts from the gymnastics sub:

I’m not even THAT mad at TAS/CAS. It’s the IOC/FIG that deserve most of the blame.

    Poor Jordan.

And, for that matter, poor Ana, who will always (through no fault of her own) have many people consider her an illegitimate medalist.

My heart breaks for both (though for Jordan more) 💔💔💔

  2. Context:

TAS/CAS ruled that Jordan Chiles’s inquiry during the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Floor Event Final was 4 seconds past the required 1-minute mark for verbal inquiry, based on the official OMEGA timekeeping record during the competition.

USAG recently received new video evidence that contradicts this ruling and moves to request the reinstatement of Jordan Chile’s bronze-medal score of 13.766. However, this request is now believed to be rejected by TAS/CAS.

**Therefore, the amended score ranking still stands, with Bărbosu (ROU) third place and now receive the bronze medal, Voinea (ROU) fourth place, and Chiles (USA) fifth place and must return her bronze medal.**

  3. The Americans on Twitter are gonna have a field day with this one. Better stay off there for a bit.

Anyways I feel so bad for Jordan. This is utterly terrible and she does not deserve this. Oh well – LA2028 she’ll be back and she’ll get gold for sure!!

  4. She better hold onto that medal, this whole thing has pitted athletes against each other due to administrative fuck ups.

  5. This isn’t over by a long shot. The US is going to appeal above CAS due to them not being allowed to properly present evidence. The likelihood of CAS reopening and admitting error was always considered low. This literally means nothing.

  6. So when presented with facts, they decide to ignore them. And why would you strip someone of a medal like that when it’s been reserved for cheaters and dopers? Neither of which Jordan is. I think most people will always consider Jordan the legitimate medalist regardless of what happens . Why put either athlete in this position? Just give the other girl a bronze too.

  7. I just think it’s stupid someone can submit a complaint that someone else’s complaint was too late (by four seconds no less) and actually have it be accepted. It’s oxymoronic.

As for what it means to team USA it’s pretty meaningless, I feel bad for Chiles though and I’m surprised the Romanian wanted a medal on these terms (I.e. ‘i want your medal because it took four seconds too long for the judges to correct their scoring mistake’). It was probably the lure of the cash prize, €21k for a bronze in Romania.

  8. I’d keep the medal and tell the IOC to go fuck itself, no need to make a return in that sport, she’s got two games’ worth of hardware

  9. These bureaucrats could care less about reaching the correct result. In the meantime, why aren’t the judges that incorrectly computed the scores being scrutinized?

  10. Jordan didn’t produce a bronze medal performance. I honestly think Sabrina MANECA-VOINEA should have gotten bronze. Her camp should have requested a review of her penalty.
