Problem for Russia is that they *can’t* just pull out anymore. At this point, they have taken so many losses that pulling out… whoo boy that’d be one hell of a rebellion. They really don’t have many options other than try and make it a win in a war of attrition.

Legally speaking, he’d be trading russian soil for russian soil, which would be a huge blow to morale/prestige/power.
Even Strelkov-Girkin (the main terrorist behind all this mess, including MH17) instantly said that it was a mistake. Pootin got 5 minutes of popularity among stupid russian bydlo, but for that he effectively cornered himself with no way to backtrack.
