Mystery of Stonehenge deepens after ‘jaw-dropping’ discovery

Remarkable new scientific research at Stonehenge has revealed an extraordinary new mystery.

Mineralogical tests on the massive six-tonne stone at the heart of the monument show that this central rock, known as the altar stone, was brought to Stonehenge from the far north of Scotland.

The altar stone is arguably the most ritually important stone in Stonehenge, because it is the rock that marks the intersection of the prehistoric temple’s two most important celestial alignments – the winter solstice sunrise to summer solstice sunset alignment, and the summer solstice sunrise to winter solstice sunset alignment.

  1. You have to ask why was it so important to whatever Stonehenge was constructed for that a stone had to be 'transported' from the north of Scotland? And wouldn't any old stone of a similar size have sufficed? We think we know so much, when in reality we know so little.

Those are optical compasses for the ancient sailors….they are always close to water..take a boat and see how they guide you on safe path…

  3. The Independent speaks of Geo-Political Relations as though they even existed 4500 years ago between these people. Perhaps they simply wanted that particular stone and took it to Stonehenge. How dull and ignorant to assume any sort of 'Politics' was involved at all. It's all very telling.

  4. Part of Hindu civilisation and much older than 4500 years old. There was no civilisation in Atlantic Asia No manuscripts. The people were not termites but Hindu.

  5. I mean it was probably a Neolithic dick swinging contest. “Look at the stone Arthur brought this year it’s the biggest yet! Wales you lose your place in the centre to this monster unless you can get us a bigger one.”

  6. One of the digs in the areas surrounding Stonehenge within the last 10-15 yrs, unearthed animal remains which suggest they were raised in the farthest most northern regions of this island, so this "Discovery" is not so much jaw dropping as it is a confirmation of earlier discoveries that show that our ancestors were far better at getting along than we are

  7. They probably employed African engineers to do that.
Or the stone could have been carried south by glacial flows during an ice age – if indeed it originated in Scotland

  8. I remember when it was still ours as a little kid in the early 70's. Great memory. Now only the elites and teacher's pets are allowed to play on the stones.
