Escalating violence in the occupied West Bank | DW Documentary

Confrontation between Jewish settlers and Palestinians in the West Bank has increased dramatically in recent months. This documentary offers an exclusive picture of the now destroyed Bedouin village Wadi al-Siq and the Nur Shams refugee camp.

Since the 7 October 2023 Hamas terror attack, which killed 1,200 people, Israel has been at war with the terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip. Hamas run health authorities in Gaza state tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians have been killed in the fighting. Removed from the main focus of international attention, the situation in the occupied West Bank has also deteriorated significantly.

In the last three months of 2023, there were over 530 reported attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians in the West Bank. According to Human Rights Watch, the year 2023 witnessed the highest number of such incidents since records began in 2006.

UN sources have recorded over 500 killings of Palestinians by Israelis in the occupied territories from 7 October 2023 to late June 2024. During the same period, 12 Israelis were killed by Palestinians in the region.

In the Palestinian refugee camp Nur Shams a father stands among the ruins of what was once his home, destroyed by Israeli security forces during a raid. Israeli authorities describe such actions as defensive and designed to counter the threat posed by suspected Hamas terrorists. The Bedouin village Wadi al-Siq no longer exists – the dwellings here were destroyed by Israeli settlers. As-Sawiya, another village, has also witnessed settler violence – a Palestinian farmer was recently killed. But here families are receiving help, including from Rabbi Arik Ascherman among other Israeli and Palestinian human rights activists. Israeli settlements in the occupied territories are in breach of the UN Charter on human rights, as well as in contravention of UN Security Council resolution 2334 agreed in December 2016.

  1. geno supporters ould just turn a blind eye and try to brush it under the rug,,, while you can see the fake news propagated by Isreal get millions of views like beheading of babies, which was then not even verified. THey have stopped UN investigations into everything they claim as well

  7. The people of gaza supported Hamas and their continued attack on Isreal, they knew they had tunnels built under their buildimgs. At some point the people of Isreal have to respond, If Hamas and Hezbollah did not have a stated objective of the removal of Isreal, which basically means they are calling for all Jews to be killed and removed from the area, that is the true meaning of the river to the sea. Until this is no longer the objective of these Iranian backed orginizations this will continue. Iran does not want peace they want total control of the region. They want Islamic rule over the world.

  13. This is a difficult situation because if Israel would drop their defences they would be targeted and k*lled of. However, them attacking the people who are the actual agressors also doesn't fixes the issue. Religion is a terrible curse upon our world :/

  17. didn't know anything about Palestine before oct 7th …but history shows 99.9 % of the time entity asking for freedom is never wrong…decided to educate myself…and once you learn…it's impossible not to side with Palestinians…76 years of suffering…having your home stolen away from you..kicked out of your own land…made refugees on your own land…and the current genocide ….I only pray God gives them freedom they deserve and Israel and it's supporters get everything they wish for Palestinians!

    I knew back then how awful life was going to become for an entire population, Iz are and have been vicious to Palestinians since its founding.
