Considering how they can deliver, how would you order these cities (confirmed potential hosts) from the best host to worst host?

  1. None of them would be a good choice. Sad but true. Maybe 2056! Has to be in Europe 2036.

That said, Santiago maybe the frontrunner.

  2. I don’t see any good options.

I think no one wants Olympics that cost dozen of billions anymore. Paris has shown that you can do a great Olympic with a small budget and great venues. Those countries are going to play with those high budgets number again only to jerk off as being the best countries of the planet. People are tired of that.

  3. Ahmedabad is just so political. Delhi is obviously a better pick within India because all the CWG infrastructure is still there.

  4. Santiago is nice. A modern South American capital, with pretty good infrastructure and close sites for the sea sports (Valparaiso, Viña del Mar) and white waters sports.

  5. None of these options are great, but at least Santiago has done well as a host of a recent international athletic competition. I’m not sure how much existing infrastructure Istanbul has. There is no reason to believe either of the two remaining cities could pull it off.

  6. I mean Nusantara barely even exists as a city so, I’d have to put that one at the bottom

  7. 1) Istanbul

    2) Santiago

    3) Nusantara

    4) An American landfill

    5) Guantanamo bay

    99) Ahmedabad

  8. Isn’t Nusantra not even built yet? I know some people have joked countries should just build cities for the Olympics, but…

  9. Istanbul is the most likely out of those and it’s not even close:

    1. 2036 will be in an European city. Europe never spent more than 12 years without hosting the games. Istanbul is an Eurasian city, so it counts. It also counts as Asia.

    2. It’s a big, famous international city with plenty of history and connecting two continents. It’d be the first intercontinental games ever. Some events could even start in one continent and finish on another, which would be pretty symbolic.

    3. It’s probably the city with the most bids that hasn’t hosted yet. It almost won 2020 and there’s no Tokyo this time around. Competition is much weaker.

    4. Because of their many previous bids, they’ve built plenty of infrastructure already and would barely have to build new facilities. They also got many international events in the meantime.

Unless another European city presents a better bid, I think Istanbul has got this. Economy would be an issue, but the other countries that are bidding aren’t in much better shape except for India, which has many other problems.

  10. I believe another city will eventually rescue 2036 from the current confirmed bids, but if I’m forced to:

    1. Istanbul
    2. Santiago
    3. Ahmedabad
    4. Nusantara

  11. Anyone remember the commonwealth games in India? It was basically an organisational disaster, I can’t imagine they’d do much better with the Olympics which is a much bigger event

  12. Santiago is the best choice I’d say. Now, who knows what those cities will look like 12 years from now.

  13. Santiago needs to get their smog under control before hosting, visited last year and couldn’t believe the smog, can’t even see the mountains around because of it

  14. Santiago de Chile seems like the best bid. Istanbul has been an also ran since like 1992 and there’s a reason it never gets chosen.

  15. Ahmedabad should be close to bottom. The city has no sporting infrastructure except for one huge cricket stadium and one new sports city which is being developed. And that is not even the start of things. Ahmedabad is a mid-tier Indian city and the infrastructure reflects that.

The airport is nowhere near big enough to handle the Olympics, they will have to build a new one. The metro is only like 30 kms, they will need to increase that x10. I am fairly certain there are nowhere near enough hotel rooms to accommodate tourists for the Olympics, which is another huge cost. Even if the govt. builds all that mega infra, what will happen after the Olympics? Ahmedabad in the normal course of things actually doesnt need all that infra, as opposed to other cities like Delhi or Mumbai.

Ahmedabad is also pretty much the dullest big Indian city, not much to do in the city, alcohol is also banned. I dont imagine too many international tourists would be salivating at the prospect of visiting Ahmedabad. This is as opposed to previous Olympic hosts like Paris and London which are tourist magnets. Or other potential Indian cities like Delhi.

All of the above will require a huge government push. But I am not sure how serious the govt. is outside of the Olympic bid being boisterous election posturing. I really fail to understand if the govt. is really serious about this, why they will choose Ahmedabad over Delhi. Delhi has pretty much all the basic infrastructure needed for the Olympics and will need only some upgrades, opposed to Ahmedabad which will pretty much need everything to be built from scratch. This honestly makes me believe the bid is just a populist decision to give Modi’s core electorate something to boast about, instead of something which is serious. Also, if Modi loses the next election, I am not sure how happy the next govt. will be to pay the bills. This is considering that Ahmedabad is really a regional Indian city and building all that infrastructure there might not be the best value for money.

  16. I’m thinking either Santiago or Istanbul. Preferably Istanbul so the Olympics are in a timezone close to mine after two Olympics that definitely won’t be 😂

  17. 1. Santiago – Successfully hosted Pan-Ams recently, reasonably positioned on the Pacific rim.
    2. Istanbul – Stadiums good, infrastructure and security are a big?
    3. Nusuntara (if finished?!) – Nice idea, but it doesn’t exist yet!
    4. Ahmedabad – India is only interested in cricket, otherwise just not capable of showing the interest to organise a serious multi-sport event.

  19. Istanbul would be the best choice, regardless of what anyone thinks about Erdogan and being EurAsian, they should get that bid.

  20. If it’s moved to October-November, then Santiago for sure, but otherwise Istanbul. The other two will be terribly(!) warm no matter what.

  21. 1. Santiago. Chili is like the sane brother in the family of crazies that is South America.

    2. Ahmedabad (despite most its border countries being failed states India remains stable), pretty safe option.

    3. Istanbul. Turkey is getting less and less stable currently torn between middle east and the west.

    4. Nusantara. At least build the place before bidding.

  22. They should do something similar to how they awarded Paris and LA the 2024 and 2028 games simultaneously.

Award Istanbul and Santiago the 2036 and 2040 games at the same time.

  23. Not India thanks

But I’m afraid money will speak and they will get what they want

  24. I hope Istanbul, but I’m just biased because my husband is from there and we would be able to travel there easily

  25. I think you put them in the right order best to worst tbh. If there’s another South American city to host the Olympics, I think Santiago is definitely the best option. It’s honestly a surprise to me that Istanbul hasn’t hosted one yet, given how culturally and geopolitically relevant it’s been for basically all of history. India I feel needs to prove its worth as an Olympic country before hosting, although certainly I hope we can get an Olympics in the largest country on Earth at some point. Nusantara… doesn’t exist (yet), so we’re gonna pass on that one for now.

  26. India cannot be trusted with this kind of event. Female athletes won’t be safe there.

  27. Santiago [2023 Panams organization were really good, new place, amazing public and climate conditions peak]

Instanbul [lets see how they do on their European games, but maj of their big comps are very well organized]

Ahmedabab [their organization history is not that great, tho India seems a good place to bring new fans and i think they would bring compound archery..so this give them points]

Nusantara [well that doesnt exist right now and too close to Melbourne time zone]
