Greece wildfires reach Athens as thousands are evacuated | BBC News

Thousands of residents have been evacuated from their homes as large wildfires reach the suburbs of Athens, with some flames leaping as high as 25m (80ft).

Homes and properties in nearby towns such as Varnavas as well as northeastern parts of the Greek capital are on fire, including a school in Nea Penteli.

With the sun setting, aircraft working to extinguish the flames have been forced to land, making it a ground operation overnight.

Residents are complaining there are not enough fire trucks and firefighters to help, as Greek authorities request international assistance.

  11. Behind this toxic + sick situation Greece face, every single summer since I remember myself back in early – mid [90's], is human factor!!
    You should be ashamed all of you in TV networks, who covers stories about wildfires across Europe [or], elsewhere. You have no clue of what exactly is happening, I keep hear news…."the climate change is 100% responsible 4 all wildfires across Europe, Africa, America or elsewhere". Really, what the fuck!!!
    Human factor has caused tragic damage (2) entire ecosystem = mother nature the last [70 years or so], and suddenly all of you blame the climate change. You really are that much smart, (2) blame climate change, while you totally ignore, how it started!!!!!
    Climate change and wildfires is part of human factor [1000%].

  13. Like I keep saying: Even 100 years ago was too late to do something about Global Warming. These are all signs of the "End times." De Nostradamus predicted that the end of the world would happen in 2085. Jesus will return to Earth 40 years before this happens. So roughly we can expect Jesus in 20 years time = 2045. The Anti-Christ is already busy now. Politicians acting "funny" are in the grips of Satan.

  21. Every summer we have wildfires caused by arson and short circuit from power grid cables.
    But no measures are taken , no fireproof zones around residential areas, no support to the fire service.
    Climate change is a factor, but not the only one.
    Greece is doomed…

  25. Global warming my ass. This is just an annual summer thing in a very arid region. I watched wildfires burning in Greece near the city of Patras in 1985 while spending a summer there with relatives nearly 40 years ago. Nobody was yapping about “global warming” and “climate change.”
