  1. Lebanon is an amazing country controled by a government that is a many headed dragon. Some heads are pretty damn decent, some are Iranian sponsored terrorists (we do have good Iranians as well) The people of Lebanon are hositable, warm, and wonderful. I have spent time there. It pains me to watch this all play out.

  2. What does this mean for Lebanon? Is there just no more electricity there? Or do they import power and that’s still running?

  3. It really is very sad. My grandma had a lifetime pass on United (my grandfather was VP of sales back in the 50’s). She traveled the world many times over (she was a teacher, and spent her summers traveling since my GP died in the late 50’s). Anyway, I remember asking her what her favorite place was and she said Beirut. Said it was Vegas on the water, only classier. I wish I could have seen it like that.

  4. I work with someone who came from Lebanon about 10 years ago. About 4 years ago, he was heavily involved with trying to get large quantities of generators sent to the country – small ones, pull cord start, etc – for personal use because the grid had become so unreliable. Even then, he said there was little chance of anything but a slide into a state where the government wouldn’t be able to provide basic services in a uniform way. Unfortunately, that leads to the formation of regional micro-governments, which leads to militias to protect the small gains the locales make.

  5. This is pretty standard in Lebanon. Government only provides 2-3 hours of power. The rest is on generators.

  6. I am old enough that I remember the phrases “it looks like Beirut” or “bombed out like Beirut” from the 1980’s. People would know exactly what you were describing. Of course, that was back when the US news agencies actually cared about international news in a large way and US citizens were exposed to it on the nightly news and in their local papers.

I am beginning to despair of ever getting to eat Lebanese food in Lebanon, which has been a travel wish for a long time.
