  1. First Minister John Swinney sent Angus Robertson to the controversial meeting with the Israeli deputy ambassador, the Sunday Mail can reveal.

The SNP, which has consistently demanded a ceasefire in Gaza, was already in crisis after the External Affairs Secretary’s “secret meeting” with Daniela Grudsky.

But now it is facing even bigger questions after it emerged Swinney, who was also sent the invitation, asked Robertson to attend.

Former SNP MP Angus MacNeil said: “John Swinney is clearly up to his eyes in this – the Scottish Government should have told them where to go.

“When people are committing regular atrocities no decent people, and certainly not elected representatives in Scotland, should be giving them any succour with meetings.

“The clueless SNP government have taken their eye off the ball on independence and are further dismaying remaining supporters with this cluster blunder.”

Ex-SNP MSP Sandra White said: “We need to know why this was kept secret. I question if the decision to meet the deputy ambassador was approved by cabinet or just by John Swinney.

“If it was just by John Swinney, perhaps on the insistence of Angus Robertson, then that is disrespectful to the rest of cabinet and to the rest of Scotland.

“I would have liked to know this was going to happen as I’d have been outside St Andrew’s House along with others demonstrating against it.

“We have the right to know what the Israeli government is doing and saying to our own representatives.”
