  1. It’s ironic that Russia directly caused this to happen. Ukraine was fine fighting to liberate its own territory, and ironically that military reality was useful to Russia. It allowed them to leave their border mostly undefended, save for small raids.

Then, someone bizarrely came up with the idea of staging an invasion in Kharkiv to put the city under threat. Perhaps seemed like a good idea at the time since NATO was forbidding Ukrainians from striking into Belgorod oblast with their weapons. But the offensive failed because it got launched too early, and was rapidly contained.

The result was that NATO gave approval for NATO weapons to be used to strike Russian territory. It also gave legitimacy for Ukraine to invade Russia, citing Russia’s own stated purpose for invading Kharkiv.

The whole 2024 Kharkiv offensive was a massive L for Russia and seriously backfired. Now, the narrative of Russia “slowly but steadily pushing the Ukrainians” and “Ukraine losing the war” is completely gone from the public discourse. Ukraine has taken more ground in 2024 in two weeks than Russia gained all year. All of the idiots who claimed this would be another Ukrainian Krnky and that Russia would spank the Ukrainians and drive them back across the border sure look rather stupid now.

  2. The joke here is that here is Russia has been threatening to expand the opeeration zone to “push away” UA long-range weapons from striking RU proper. Zelenskyy is just giving them a taste of their own medicine.
