  1. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/ukraine/2024/08/18/ukraine-war-zelenskyy-russia-putin/74850679007/) reduced by 74%. (I’m a bot)

    > The Ukraine military's stunning offensive into Russia's Kursk region will create a "Buffer zone on the aggressor's territory" to discourage Russian attacks into Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday.

    > "Residents of Kursk's Korenevo District, who fled the fighting when Ukraine forces overran the region, cannot return to their homes, the district's top officials said Sunday. Marina Degtyareva said the situation there remains"very difficult," "People who persist in returning home pose problems for the Russian military and that some attempts "Lead to awful tragedies." Residents will be notified when it is safe, she said in a social media post.

    > The incursion, which Russian authorities say has led to the evacuation of more than 120,000 civilians, came as a shock to many people living in the Kursk region along the Ukraine border.

  2. So, ahem, how long does Ukraine have to hold old Russian territory before it becomes officially part Ukraine? Russia claimed Crimea after occupying it. I suppose Ukraine could have the local people vote in a referendum to leave Russia if this foothold keeps getting bigger.

  3. Russia sending the Kadyrovites to Kursk is probably only going help Ukraine by making the local Russians fearful enough of the Russian military to support Ukraine. The Russian populace already hates the Kadyrovites, so letting them run around raping and looting is only going to help Ukraine control the area.

  4. Pretty wild to think we’re witnessing history, Russia has been invaded, that is a big deal.

  5. Great news. When do they start marching to Moscow? I hope very soon and hopefully they can capture Putin

  6. Good. The Russian military went from second best in the world to second best in Russia.
