    Emergency measures have been activated by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to ease [prison overcrowding](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/08/06/prisons-are-in-crisis-releasing-inmates-early-wont-solve-it/) as more rioters are being sentenced for their role in the recent unrest.

    Shabana Mahmood, the Justice Secretary, has ordered that defendants waiting across the north of England for a court appearance will be kept in police cells until prison space is available.

    The system, known as Operation Early Dawn, was activated on Monday morning. 

    It was previously used by the Conservative government in May.
