Russian generals can force Putin to end the war in Ukraine

The lack of significant resistance to Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region may indicate that Russian elites are signaling to Putin that the war is over.

This opinion was expressed in a commentary to the BBC by Mykhailo Bociurkiw, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center. According to him, the slow reaction to the Ukrainian invasion may indicate hints of disobedience.

“Ukrainian troops have broken through where there should have been highly effective barriers. You don’t see much resistance from the population and law enforcement, there were no reports of shots fired from any police station. I think that such a slow reaction from the security forces, if this is true, may indicate that the generals and the FSB are telling Putin: “Enough!” – added Bociurkiw.Russian generals are also worried about the lack of soldiers.

Ivan Tymochko, the head of the Council of Reservists of the Ground Forces of Ukraine says that Russia may need up to 100,000 personnel to drive the Ukrainian Armed Forces out of the Kursk region.

“To stop the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region, Russia would need to deploy tens of thousands of troops. To build a quality defense and halt our forces, they need between 50,000 and 100,000 personnel, specifically from line brigades and units, not the mixed forces they had there,” said Tymochko.

He noted that to repel the Ukrainian advance, Russia needs to deploy line brigades and units in the Kursk region – infantry and paratroopers. However, the Russian army must first establish logistics: to set up weapon depots, and establish food, fuel and ammunition supplies.

“I’m not even talking about a simultaneous Russian offensive to push our troops back – it’s complex and will take a lot of time. But this will also depend on the local population and how ready they are to resist. Currently, we see that they are not at all inclined to resist the Ukrainian Armed Forces. So, Putin will have to rely solely on the military, which will force him to change his war strategy,” he said.

According to Tymochko, Russia needs a different type of warfare in the Kursk region – mobile warfare.

“This requires a lot of equipment, and even the units currently facing the Ukrainian Armed Forces are only 30-40% equipped; the rest is on the front line in Ukraine,” he noted.

  6. Becoz of putin's pride & stubborness, the russian people will suffer the consequences of war. I don't think he will back down until he, himself, becomes a casualty of war. His whole countrymen & soldiers are the ones suffering. He might win but the number of deaths among the soldiers & civilians will further increase. He will end up to be the most stupidest president if he will sacrifice his people for nothing. He should stop before it gets out of hand and a crazy general uses the nuclear warhead to annihilate innocent Russians & Ukrainians. You are one of the most intelligent brains this world has ever had. Stop for a while & think if it is worthy to continue your fight becoz Ukraine is only a small country to waste your ideologicals & principles. Put a stop into this war NOW!!!

  7. Title is absolute nonsense. This is not how it works in a Nationalsocialist Führerstaat. Just as saying German Fieldmarshal´s & Generals or OKW (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht) or OKH (Oberkommando des Heeres) could have stopped Hitler. All Generals and Marshal´s who disagreed with Hitler have been ousted, retired or put to reserve. Only their incredible popularity saved some of them from being court-martialled (von Mannstein) while Rommel was forced to suicide…just to name 2

  10. It won't change anything. Everyone has to go not just Putin. It won't stop the red army from doing anything in the future. The game stays the same only the PLAYERS change. Just ask this question to the Russians that are fighting on the side of Ukraine. They all said it won't stop or change anything with Putins death. There's a few videos out there where they explained it throughly and in detail.

  14. Putin is a narcissist he won’t accept any advice as he is a know all. Putin is so deep and in the knowledge that no one has pulled him up gives his stupid mind the impression that he is invincible and right in pursuing a war where the cost to his country is disproportionately massive. He is destroying his country. His behaviour is also signalling to the world around him that he has no military skills, isn’t an economist and doesn’t care for his people. He can carry on, the longer he does the more he damages his own economy. His lap dog mentaldiv is going crazy trying to justify why everyone should pay the price for Putins stupidity.

  20. The UA incursion into Kursk has been an unexpected windfall for Russia – a bonus demilitarisation of Kiev's forces!

    In addition to the 1,700-2,000 UA troops added to the scoreboard each day across the SMO, there is an extra 300 a day added in the Kursk area alone! e.g. yesterday, 1.935 in SMO, 330 in Kursk = 2,265. Plus an additional 409 armoured vehicles in 13 days!

    The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue to repel the AFU attempt to invade the territory of the Russian Federation.

    Units of the Sever Group of Forces supported by Army Aviation and artillery fire conduct reconnaissance and search operations to locate and eliminate small enemy sabotage groups in forest belts attempting to get deeper into the Russian territory to the south of Skrylevka and Sheptukhovka.

    Attacks launched by assault detachments in the direction of Olgovka, Russkoye Porechnoye, and Cherkasskoye Porechnoye were repelled. The AFU losses amounted to one tank, one infantry fighting vehicle, two armoured fighting vehicles, and more than 25 Ukrainian troops, four AFU servicemen were taken prisoner.

    Aviation and artillery strikes as well as actions of defending troops inflicted losses on manpower and hardware clusters of the AFU 22nd, 61st, 115th mechanised brigades, and 80th Air Assault Brigade near Borki, Bogdanovka, Vishnyovka, Viktorovka, Kositsa, Lyubimovka, Melovoy, Snagost, west of Martynovka, and south east of Korenevo.

    Operational-Tactical Aviation delivered strikes at manpower and hardware concentration areas of reserves of the AFU 82nd Air Assault Brigade, 103rd, and 129th territorial defence brigades near Basovka, Vorozhba, Kruzhok, Miropolye, Novaya Sech, and Sadki (Sumy region).

    Over the past 24 hours, the AFU losses amounted to more than 330 Ukrainian troops and 27 units of hardware, including four tanks, one infantry fighting vehicle, three armoured personnel carriers, 19 armoured fighting vehicles, eight motor vehicles, two artillery guns, and three mortars.

    Since the beginning of hostilities in Kursk region, the AFU losses amounted to up to 3,800 Ukrainian troops, 54 tanks, 26 infantry fighting vehicles, 48 armoured personnel carriers, 281 armoured fighting vehicles, 123 motor vehicles, 27 artillery guns, five SAM launchers, seven MLRS launchers, including three of HIMARS system and one of MLRS system, five electronic warfare stations, as well as four units of engineering vehicles, including two counterobstacle vehicles and one UR-77 mine clearing vehicle.

    The operation to neutralise the AFU units is in progress.
