The reason why ties are common in swimming. The tolerance on an Olympic swimming pool is 3 centimeters in length in variance per lane, so there is no way to ensure that one swimmer didn’t have a shorter length of pool to swim than another.

  1. Note that this article is from 2016, but they still only time down to a hundredth of a second in 2024, presumably for this same reason.

  2. I find it hard to believe that Olympic swimming pools can’t be built to more exact tolerances than 3cm per lane.
