Is Germany going to cut off new military aid to Ukraine? | DW News

A German government spokesman has denied that Berlin is turning its back on Kyiv, despite budget plans that call for reducing aid to Ukraine by fifty percent next year.

The denial comes after German media reported on a letter written by Finance Minister Christian Lindner to the defense and foreign ministries, that called new aid into question.

In the letter, he said “new measures” with obligatory payments could be introduced only if “financing was secured” in budget plans for this and the coming years.

For this year, Germany has earmarked some €7.5 billion ($89.2 billion) for military aid to Ukraine, and €4 billion for 2025.

The sums can be increased by parliamentary vote, as has already occurred for 2024.

Lindner and his fiscally conservative Free Democrats have been trying to reduce government spending in line with Germany’s constitutional debt brake, which limits the amount of new debts the governnment can take on.

The other parties in the ruling coalition, the Greens and Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party, have both said they want to reform the debt brake in order to allow much needed long-term investment.

  1. I guess 2 wars and camps are not enough, being the 2nd largest source of funding for the Russian armed forces is also not enough. This is why so many people including some German citizen themselves tried so hard to hunt down the war criminals from ww2, it was to prevent them from creating political staples and lines with huge stolen resources. Sadly they failed and now the consequences.

  2. Prime suspect in an economic attack with trillion-dollar damage. We should stop all support until we have free access and full support to establish that they were not involved in any type on that attack. And we got a contract that guarantees recourse, compensation, repairs and fines if any involvement is proven. If they are innocent they have nothing to fear or?!

  3. Some Germans seem not to understand why it is vitally important to support Ukraine. All kinds of autocrats have used wars of aggression not only to increase their popularity among the people but also to silence the opposition. International bodies like the UN, the International Court of Justice in The Hague and the EU were created to stop this madness.
Western democracies are supporting the fight in Ukraine not because they hate the Russians, but because it is seen necessary to protect the international political system, the main idea of which is to replace war with negotiations.
I'm sure that there will be dictators in the future too. However, democracies must make it crystal clear that totalitarian states are no longer allowed to invade other countries without serious consequences.
What about Russia, isn't it a demoratic country? Let me give the hallmarks of democracy: free elections (no imprisonment or murder of rivals; no rigging of results); a free press that adheres to a code of ethics for journalists; the right to organise demonstrations; an independent judiciary. Russia is a totalitarian state in the guise of a democracy.
I'm afraids there are political movements in many European countries, which prefer autocracy instead of democracy.

  4. bad guys always lose why u think everyone leave Germany america broke germanys back and are hold their head under the water and germany is like nothing to see here

  5. Ukraine destroyed Nord Stream and still expect Germany to support Ukraine. Such a great alliance. I used to support Ukraine fully and donate thousands Euros to them. But no more now!

  6. When own economy is in recession⬇️ for past 4️⃣+ years no country can provide aid to other country so it is 💯% good that German government 🇩🇪 has reduced 50% funding to Ukraine.Focus on saving the burning home rather than providing the left out water to someone else's home.

  7. Germany is a vassal of the US. They would support Ukraine even if it means rising taxes on their citizens. However due to the industrial recession, energy price crisis and pure lack of money such support is Risky , less they anger the crowds and have riots too big to opress.

  8. Again, Germany demonstrate how poorly its decision making is when it is about geopolitics. I am French and when I consider the number of bad decisions Germany took since the euro crisis (adding the energy crisis and nuclear sector recently), I conclude this country is not fit to take the lead in Europe. Grow a spine and read history books, do your homeworknand we'll talk !

  9. As an American, it is WILD to me that the “Greens” in countries like England and Germany are proudly giving full-throated and well-articulated defenses of WHY it is so important that we stand with Ukraine NOW and why we really have no choice but to provide them with all the aid we can if we want to keep our freedom, our prosperity, our safety and stability. In the US, MANY of the 🤡s that pass for “progressive liberals,” “environmentalists/greens,” as well as the 🤡s that pass for/identify as “conservatives” are WAY too eager to whine about Ukraine, how the pittance of our budget that goes to them is preventing anything from being done to help them/their pet issue(s) and thus how bad they have it, and why Ukraine needs to “accept a ceasefire” and “work with Russia for peace.” 🤮🤮🤮 how anyone can be ignorant enough to say that with a safe face, I will never understand…

  10. After building Nordstream, thus setting the Ukraine war in motion (I wrote an article about this 15 years ago, it was easily predictable) and offering helmets, it is awful to cut aid. Didn't think I could be more disappointed in German politics, but every time it keeps getting worse

  11. Biden is leaving so no pressure now….."we want peace to prevail" 😅😅😅😅😅😅 . Americans; U can't live with them, U can't live without them😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
