  1. I mean our whole team usually leads the league in this stat, right?

EDIT: yup, we’ve had the most passes in the league every year starting in 2016-17. Interestingly, we were also high up under Mancini and Pellegrini.

  2. TBF Toni Kroos does play by being dangerous most of the time. Still the point is still very good.

  3. Toni Kroos according to fbref.com

    – Progressive passes: better than 99% of midfielders in the top5 leagues last season.

    – Assists: better than 97% of midfielders in the top5 leagues last season.

  4. I think he said it particularly for players like him who’d attempt riskier passes for players in deeper positions it’s obviously a solid indicator

  5. It’s a combination of ability vs risk. If you make lots of progressive passes at a high rate of accuracy, you’re just good.

Independently it’s pretty useless, but so are lots of stats. They need to be used in conjunction.

  6. Do people not understand that there are different profiles of midfielder who are all equally important? A midfield needs creativity but it also needs players who will consistently find the creative players in good spaces which gives them opportunities to create. Without either a midfield will struggle. Just look at Foden and the other attacking midfielders for England this summer. I was watching Foden in great spaces which he would be found in for City but because the England build up players were so poor at finding the next line then Foden looked shit.
