  2. Are we sure the second BMP isn’t Ukrainian? It seems to hurriedly take a shot at the Kozak(?) and then stop, seemingly because they realized it’s a friendly vehicle. Unless their gun jammed, I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t continue to engage a stationary enemy vehicle at close range.

The markings on the destroyed BMP obviously paint another picture: Definitely seems to be a ‘V’, which I understand is used primarily by Russian naval/marine units, some of which are involved in fighting here?

I think the most plausible scenario here is indeed Russian friendly fire: The stationary BMP (which earlier took some poorly aimed shots at the 113) is clearly Russian. I’m guessing they were unable to distinguish the incoming BMP as friendly and opened fire.

Still, the hesitation of the mobile BMP to engage the Kozak is curious as well as (and maybe more significantly so) the fact that the stationary BMP doesn’t engage the Kozak? Very confusing situation, even from above… imagine trying to interpret wtf is going on from a buttoned-up BMP.

I like to shit on Russia as much as anyone but this is a great example of the fog of war and why fratricide happens.

Edit: After re-watching this several times, I still think the mostly likely explanation is Russian friendly fire. The stationary BMP’s turret can be seen still firing in the same direction as the Ukrainian M113 that noped the fuck out of there a second before the BMP-2 comes flying into the intersection. That would explain why the stationary BMP does not engage the Kozak or BMP-2, initially (their turret was facing the opposite direction). The incoming BMP-2 appears to take a shot at the Kozak and then stop, but their turret doesn’t move much after that and I assume their turret or weapon failed in that critical moment. The stationary BMP then turns it’s turret towards the intersection and sees the partial profile of a Kozak blocked by an unidentifiable BMP (the ‘V” would be hard to see from their perspective). In a panic, they open fire on the friendly BMP, allowing the Kozak to escape. The Kozak likewise seems to take a few parting shots from what I assume is a crew-served HMG as they retreat.
