You know? As a kid i never associated it with racism because kids with normal parents don’t see that kind of shit. Even as an adult, because i never associated it with slavery i didn’t think much of it until people started crying about it.
I mean yeah, its a little weird, but its tradition and in the current story they aren’t slaves. They are just as valuable as the saint himself.
The only problem i have is that they 1) want them purple (kids are stupid but they aren’t that stupid) and 2) the other camp needs them to be black.
Why not go with the soot story and have everyone be eligible for piet? Just smear a ton of soot on them and be done with it.

The character of Zwarte Piet was never intended as a slave. It just turned out that way because people were dumb. The holiday was made up by a teacher about 200 years ago who didn’t know a great deal.
St, Nick is a Catholic and “our” Catholics came from Spain. Spain had moors for a time, right? Great sidekick material. Except this teacher mixed them up with blackamoors and had no idea what they looked like either. So he looked at pictures of what black people looked like. The only artwork of black people we had were from 17th century house slaves, who were dressed up in colorful outfits and paraded around as a status symbol and gimmick. That’s why they wear frilly ruffs, which is of course not something 3rd century bishops or 8th century moors would wear.
It’s just a giant conga line of stupidity that accurately describes our education system.
