My wife and I wanted to walk from Bolton Castle to Aysgarth Falls today but the high winds were making it a miserable experience – so we decided to go around the castle instead, and then travel on to Middleham and Richmond Castles too since we’re English Heritage members.

Stood in the room where Mary Queen of Scots was held for 6 months at Bolton Castle; Middleham was home to Richard III; and Richmond formed part of an estate for William the Conquerer’s cousin which, in today’s money, would be worth £135 Billion!

  1. If you’re still in Richmond, Easby Abbey is well worth a look. It’s one of English Heritage’s best free sites, in my opinion.

You can walk to it from the town centre via some waterfalls, if you’re missing Aysgarth, but there is a small car park at the site as well

  2. May Day Fest in Richmond is definitely worth a visit next year. Runs the whole weekend ending with a rubber duck race at the falls. Thousands of rubber ducks. (All collected further down the river so not an environmental disaster!)

There were some fantastic musicians at the castle playing various medieval and tudor instruments too

  3. My favourite is number two with its perky turrets, number one has a large erection to the middle but rather disappointing sides, love the green wall in number three but I worry it would be cold in winter??

  4. I fucking love castles. My imagination takes me away into thinking about how things were back then, just soaking in the history.

We’re really lucky to have so many awesome places to visit.
