  1. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has promoted Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, to the rank of general.

    **Source:** [a decree](https://www.president.gov.ua/documents/5802024-51893) of Ukraine’s president

**Quote:** “Colonel General Oleksandr Stanislavovych Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, shall be promoted to the rank of General.”

**Details:** The decree No. 580 is dated 23 August 2024. Prior to this, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine held the rank of Colonel General.

  2. Meaning a full general, the highest tier of general in the UA armed forces. Previously he was a Colonel-General (equivalent to a Lieutenant General or ~~OF-10~~ OF-8 in most Western countries), the second highest rank.

  3. Are there other generals in the army? Isn’t it a bit strange for the commander in chief to have lower rank than the people he commands?
