Fleeing war in Gaza – for a new life in Egypt? | DW Documentary

Tens of thousands of people have fled to Egypt to escape the war in Gaza. There they seek to start a new life and put the traumas of war behind them. They hope for peace but also fear for those who are still in Gaza.

14-year-old Moataz Al-Sabaawy is one of at least 100,000 Gazans who have found refuge in Egypt since the start of the war. He has been living in Cairo with his parents and sister since May 2024. His two older brothers were both killed in Gaza in an Israeli attack on the family home. The death of his brothers and his experience of the war have traumatized him. Like all the refugees, Moataz keeps in regular contact with family and friends in Gaza. Every time he calls home, he dreads hearing about the death of another loved one.

Bassem Medhat Abu Al-Aoun owned two restaurants in Gaza, one of which was near the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City in the north of the Strip. Both restaurants have been destroyed in the war. He managed to escape to Egypt with over 50 members of his family. Escape is not an option for most Gazans. No one can leave the territory without the permission of the Israeli and the Egyptian authorities. Often, the border is sealed off completely. Those wanting to leave need a humanitarian visa, which is issued by international embassies. But Egyptian journalists say there is an alternative route out: It involves paying Egyptian brokers to “coordinate” the departure. The fee is several thousand US dollars per person. Abu Al-Aoun has now opened a new restaurant in Cairo. But he worries about what the future holds.

Meanwhile Israa Ali from Egypt has founded an initiative together with her husband and friends that aims to help the refugees. It’s called “Olives Grandsons”. The organization has over 100 volunteers looking after traumatized children from Gaza. Art therapy, sport and singing help alleviate the children’s fears and trauma. The charity also offers lessons based on the Palestinian curriculum, as most families hope one day to be able to return to Gaza.

  1. West has lost all it's so called "moral values" and human rights over backing Israel. West became a joke right after this war started. West has no right to make such documentaries

  2. Gazians are Palestinian citizens, not Egyptian citizens. Egypt does not have an obligation to take displaced people in unconditionally just because they are poor or suffering. Egypt like any other countries looks after its citizens. Egypt is not a charity.

  3. 24:06 Two State Solution ?? Ha ha ha !!! A corner of Judea Samaria will become a New Country !!
Iran and Turkey will have excess to it's Air and Navel Ports !? What a Joke ! Did you hear that Bibi ?? Ha ha hah !!!

  4. It is not fair that the Palestinians have no options but to give up their land so that Jews can have their place where they can be safe. Why do Palestinians have to pay for what Europeans did to them, especially Germany.

  5. Will you please stop making programmes about bloody Gaza!!! What next, how the pets in Gaza are being treated for mental trauma??? Is there nothing else going on anywhere else in the whole world???

  6. They want their kids to continue the Palestinian education because they want to eventually return to GAZA!?!? That land is now cursed! Going back even when the war is over is not a good idea.

  7. Notice how all the surrounding countries want nothing to do with Palestinians/people from the Gaza region. They harbor & protect terrorists like Hamas. However so many people fall for their propaganda and blame Israel for everything.

  8. Even Palestinian refugees don't take care of each other. That rich Gazan who just opened that restaurant and didn't even hire a single other Palestinian…

  9. You can see that their life before October 7 was good. It all changed after the Oct 7 attack. You cannot justify that bla bla bla reasons. You can see based on their stories especially the restaurant owner, they are almost living in luxury before Oct 7.

  10. Israa Ali and the volunteers will go straight to heaven inshallah. I can't describe how moved I am seeing what you are doing for the children of Gaza ❤❤❤.

  11. They started a war they couldn't handle. And war is like that. The same thing is happening in Sudan and Congo but all these media channels are looking the other way.

  12. If Israel takes over all nearby country it will grow big and if this will happen it will become more powerful than America and then it will rule the world i think this is their plan but my Allah subhanawatala is the best planner

  13. Liberty, justice, equality, peace, security and an independent state, within the borders established decades ago by the UN, for the Palestinians, brutally robbed of their land and freedom, constantly oppressed and murdered for over 75 years. Freedom, justice, equality, security, human rights for all, not just for the chosen ones. Stop this horriific madness, this monstrous genocide, carnage, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and all terrible atrocities immedietly!!!!!

  14. All innocent muslims ,all displaced muslims needs to let the world know…Terrorists, Hamas, Isis are all just other names for criminals(murderers)that give all of Islam a bad name and causing others to hate innocent muslims. Racists are just another name for criminals giving their own race a bad name and causing problems for all. Criminals sits among all causing problems for all. Wise leaders do not lead people into violence, bloodshed, prison, destruction or into mass murder of the innocent. War is just another name for mass murder of the innocent. Murder is against humanity. Murder is against the law. Murder is against the God of Moses ❤. Keep the peace people for you do not even know all you have in peace until peace is gone. ❤ Jesus preached peace for a reason ❤

  15. One of the main issues Egypt has with the Palestinians especially the ones in Gaza is the biggest threat to Egypt is the Muslim brotherhood which Egypt is trying to quash. Another big issue in Egypt is a ongoing insurgency in the Sinai. Gazans supported Hamas which is an offshoot for the Muslim brotherhood so importing 1-2 million Palestinians could bring in thousands of Hamas fighters who could oppose Egypt or try to take over the Sinai to wage their war against Israel. On top of that it would cost a lot of money to house and support these Palestinians and so there are way to many risks involved to just bring in 2 million Palestinians.
