Enjoyed the conversation about the worst, now which is the best. As someone who regularly drives from the south of England to north east Scotland, we always make a point of stopping at Tebay

  1. Cartgate. Unless you’re basing ‘the best’ on location, view, food, cleanliness, aesthetics, or anything other than ‘famous dogging hotspot with a gloryhole’.

  2. Killington lake has a nice lake, as does Annandale water. The latter also frequently has ducks and geese kicking about in the car park.

Skelton Lake near Leeds is brand new so still has a nice sheen to it but I haven’t had the chance to visit it’s lake, if it exists.

As you’ll be able to tell I’m a big fan of water at services, unless it’s a giant pot hole filled with rain and oil in the carpark.

  3. Leicester Forest East services. Southbound toilets are nicer, but you eat on the bridge over the motorway; the Chopstix is ace, and there’s a waitrose on the northern side to boot.

The place is spotless upstairs, and the cleaning staff genuinely seem like they care.

I literally, specifically will plan in a stop there as it’s the best services south of Wetherby to the M25 on the M1, in my opinion.
