Kirstie Allsopp felt ‘sick’ over social services referral

I really don’t understand this story or more importantly her viewpoint.
While I ‘get’ trying to encourage responsibility and trust, two quite young lads travelling across Europe, where they can get into trouble with family help maybe more than 24 hours away, just seems too irresponsible.
Let them travel up to the Edinburgh Fringe or a Bristol Concert, that I get, but young lads of that age don’t have the ‘depth’ of experience to maybe be able to get themselves out of trouble especially when they might be dealing in foreign languages as well.
Would people feel the same way if the two lads involved were girls?
