Is Russia becoming dependent on inexperienced conscripts on the front lines? | DW News

Ukraine’s incursion has added a further incentive for Russia to recruit soldiers for the front line. One of the motivations for soldiers to sign up seems to be money, with cash offered to volunteers. But it appears new recruits are being sent to Kursk, which is causing some dissent amongst their families. How many conscripts are being sent to Russia’s front lines?

  1. Ordinary Russians should come up to their senses, these so called elite Russians, should send their sons and daughters at the war front, they should stop using poor people people for their enrichment and protection.

  2. Putin is killing his country's young men, by the thousands and thousands…..
His hands are full of these poor young men's blood!!!

  3. This is nonsense. Russian conscripts are not allowed to take part in military combat outside of Russia, however any combat on Russian soil is mandatory for conscripts. It's not Putins word, it's Ukraines decision to add 250,000 conscripts as there enemy.

  4. It is a mobilization strategy that should be appreciated for not potentially escalating the war to regional war. By Involving foreign regular troops, like NATO defence plan only for one member nation own national military conflict tends to escalate to a greater war.

  5. The Russian people are treated the same as serfs were in the era of the Tsars
The principle difference with this criminal gang, now running Russia , is that money is being splashed around.
This will be wrecking their currency with the excessive cash.
This is not resulting in more comfort and care for The People of Russia.
It is money spent on aggressive wars, and in sacrificing the lives of their humble soldiers.
Its only products, hatred, pain, suffering and misery, are no reward, even for the rulers who are the cause of this conflict.
Have courage Russian People, and stand up to these criminals, whose only intent seems to be to do evil, using the blood of your people., sons, daughters, fathers and mothers..

  6. Lol, of course they are. Ukrainians unlocked conscripts reserves, hundreds thousands of them, which were not allowed to be deployed to Ukraine for political reasons. Now these conscripts bogged down Ukraine strategic combat reserves, best offensive mobile troops in the open. Meanwhile, Russian regular contract combat troops are moving through heavily fortified Donbass much faster, as Ukrainian best reinforcements are pinned thousand kilometers away. Bravo, Ukraine, you played yourselves, you forgot that Russia is not a Western democracy and there's no political pressure for them to rush and liberate Kursk oblast, they can afford to sacrifice it for Donbass.

  7. Not true. Ukrainians are dying on mass in Kursk because Russia have air cover bombing the Ukrainians there and destroying Ukraine oil tanks which are located on Sumy region next to Kursk.

  8. The conscripts won't get a chance to fight. Against battle hardened Ukrainian Soldiers they won't last long. They poor innocent fools are like lambs sent out to fight wolves.

  9. You would assume that a self-proclaimed military super power to have adapted to a more modern and tactical approach. But it seems that they still take "not one step backwards" very seriously when throwing men needlessly into the meat grinder. Such a pointless war.

  10. Russia makes promises of payments but they know that most of the conscripts will never survive to receive any real money . Throwing conscripts at an advancing enemy worked against the Germans as a stalling tactic to draw them into wet ground and a Russian winter they were not prepared for . This will not work against Ukraine . Ukrainian troops are acclimatized to the harsh winter just as well as Russians and their tactics way superior to the Germans . Also they know the land and the conditions just as well as the Russians do .
The biggest weakness of the Russians is they are inflexible and tactically outdated .
This all means that well trained Ukrainian troops will slaughter poorly trained conscripts under any conditions . Russia has lost over 500 000 men from the battlefield so their reliance on conscripts is getting more and more necessary .
