President Yoon Seok-yeol has ordered a strong response to digital sex crimes using 'deepfake', which synthesizes the faces of specific people into videos.

In his opening remarks at the Cabinet meeting today (27th), President Yoon said, "Deepfake videos are often dismissed as simple pranks, but they are clearly criminal acts that exploit technology while relying on the protection of anonymity," and "Anyone of us can become a victim of these digital sex crimes."

President Yoon pointed out, "Recently, deepfake videos targeting unspecified numbers of people are rapidly spreading through social media," and "Many of the victims are minors, and most of the perpetrators are also revealed to be teenagers."

He continued, "I urge the relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate and root out these digital sex crimes," and "I urge them to devise educational measures so that a healthy digital culture can take root."

Recently, a large number of group chat rooms suspected of creating and distributing fake videos by synthesizing obscene material onto women's faces have been discovered on social media, including Telegram.

According to the National Police Agency, a total of 297 cases of deepfake sexual exploitation crimes were reported nationwide from January to July, and out of the 178 suspects indicted, 131, or 73.6%, were teenagers.
