After many struggles, FC Barcelona were able to finally register their new summer signing, Dani Olmo, just in time for their third La Liga clash against Rayo Vallecano later tonight.

However, the Spaniard’s registration has generated some confusion as Barcelona took advantage of Andreas Christensen’s injury-enforced absence and used his salary space to register Olmo.

While it is allowed as per Article 77 of La Liga regulations, for a club to replace a player registration in that manner, the injury has to be a long-term one i.e., at least four months out.

But Christensen’s injury was initially said to keep him out for only two months, something that his camp still insists on, leading to confusion about Olmo’s registration.

It must be noted that a team of doctors from La Liga’s medical commission – all of whom are traumatologists specialised in sports medicine – evaluated the documents sent by Barcelona and approved that Christensen’s absence could last for four months.

Athletic Club checking with La Liga

However, it appears that one of Barcelona’s La Liga rivals, Athletic Club, are not entirely convinced.

Indeed, according to journalist Alfredo Martinez, the Basque club have approached La Liga regarding any possible irregularities in the registration of not only Dani Olmo but also Inigo Martinez.

Like Olmo’s registration was done following Christensen’s injury, Barcelona registered Martinez by utilising the salary space of Araujo, who is sidelined for four months.

Barça’s relationship with Athletic Club has become strained in recent weeks, with the latter not happy with the Catalans’ public pursuit of Nico Williams during the summer.

In fact, Athletic threatened to file a complaint against Barcelona with La Liga if they triggered his release clause this summer.

More recently, the traditional pre-match lunch between the executives of the two clubs was also cancelled before the La Liga clash this past Saturday.

This latest move from the Basque outfit is bound to have more negative impact on the relationship between the two clubs.

  1. I know it’s an unprofessional league. But for this to have any impact on things would be absurd. We’re either allowed to register Olmo according to the rules or we’re not. This is going to look bad for La Liga as well if they have to walk back their decision after a basic inquiry.

  2. As a basque, this is so sad for me. The relationship has always been cordial between clubs, but it seems to have deteriorated to the point Athletic is becoming Florentino’s pet monkey. The whole stunt they pulled with throwing fake money at Barcelona players last year was already shameful.

  3. Any respect I had for Bilbao is well and truely gone, they boot lick Madrid far too much these days

  4. While Athletic might have an argument here, the fact that this is coming right off the back of a loss against us makes them look like salty losers.

  5. If only Barca could buy Nico so they feel the pain. For some weird reason, I think that Nico could have been next Neymar for us (in a good way)

  6. Is it some political powerplay, can some local fan elaborate on why they are doing this

  7. Tebas would be the first one to sabotage Barca.

So olmo’s registration is valid otherwise it will stain the image of the league.

  8. I don’t understand why Athletic hate us so much. Seems like sore loser behaviour coming after a loss.

  9. This is fine with me. Scrutinise away, make sure everything is above board. It’s better for the league if there’s absolute clarity, if clubs can complain, if clubs can get investigated, if everything is fair and open.

  10. I don’t blame them, whole thing is fishy.

PS: I think, La liga’s ffp organization is utterly bullshit
