In truth, the first empire who can claim that “feat” were (to nobody’s surprise) the Mongols. At its height in 1280, their empire reached from the Korean peninsula to Poland. Enough “timezones” for the night to not be able to cover them all at once (at least, not during summer in the northern hemisphere).
Not that any self-respected European would accept it, mind you, but it is an interesting fact.
