  1. Like many Gen Zers, Ramirez turned to social media content creation as a side gig during the pandemic. Now, it pays more than being an Olympian does.

  2. Well, IMO, the reason she has all of those social media followers is because of her sport. That’s the angle that is drawing people in, I think. So in a sense, she is making that good money off of her Olympic pursuits, I think.

  3. The title is misleading. She’s an artistic swimmer, not a pool swimmer. The sport of artistic swimming is not nearly as popular as pool swimming.

  4. This doesn’t seem all that surprising. You’re only an Olympian once every four years. The sport you compete in has to have events throughout the year to maintain any form of cash flow. If the sport isn’t popular however, it may be miniscule.

  5. She’s a student at UCLA and majoring in Art. Don’t get me wrong, I love Art majors, but it’s not exactly the major I would choose if I was worried about my long-term financial stability.

  6. I shoot skeet competitively, it costs a lot more to compete and practice than I’ll ever make back from winning events.

  7. Umm is it shocking that a synchronized swimmer doesn’t make enough to pay bills in America?

No shit no one’s reaching out for sponsorship deals because it’s not a sport that they can make an ROI on

  8. “it’s easy to believe that all medalists are set for life.”

Really? If you showed anything beyond the most rudimentary interest in the Olympics you know that many if not most athletes are NOT the glamorous ones earning top money directly or indirectly from the sport. A sport like Synchronized Swimming is not likely to ever become profitable.

Social Media has provided a venue for athletes to become hot commodities and earn real money, which is great for those who make it like Andrea, but for most athletes it remains elusive, and it is highly dependent on non-sports factors like attractiveness, communication skills, and sometimes pure luck.

  9. USA has never had a state sponsored Olympic program. Idk why this is still a surprise every year

  10. And yet the competition to be an Olympian is off the charts.

Some people are motivated by something besides money. This should surprise no one.

  11. Mind boggling! An Olympian with a strong social media following? How could it be…
