  1. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.cnn.com/2024/08/29/europe/ukraine-f16-crashes-intl?cid=ios_app) reduced by 83%. (I’m a bot)

    > A top Ukrainian pilot was killed when a US-made F-16 fighter jet crashed on Monday, just weeks after the long-awaited planes arrived in the country a Ukrainian military source told CNN. The Ukrainian Defence Forces do not believe pilot error was behind the incident, the source added.

    > Flying the F-16 was their dream and when Juice died in a plane crash during a combat mission last August, Moonfish made it his goal to fulfill it.

  2. Wish it hadn’t happened so soon… but we knew it would. I think back to that ONE instance of Abrams hitting mines and Bradley’s getting stuck in the same quagmire. Russia wouldn’t let that go for weeks… until they screwed up and tried to claim it was multiple confrontations… when it was just the same fight from multiple angles. I’m sure they’ll crow about this one too.

All I’m sorry for is the loss of the pilot. That’s the only thing that hurts here.

  3. That’s what happens when you send Pilots with 1 year worth of training on the shit

  4. Rest in Peace Moonfish. Juice, another famous Ukrainian pilot too was killed not due to Russian fire, but on a training exercise with a L-39. Flying jets in wartime is a very dangerous activity, one slip up and it will cost you your life.

  5. Fogg of war, tough to find the truth. If it were shot by Russians in air or on the ground, would Ukraine even disclose the truth ? And when the support depends on its reputation on the battlefield ?

  6. Kinda wild the US created this jet in the late 70s and yet everyone struggles to match it

  7. God fucking damn it

Can we just throw Russia out a window?

Heard a story on NPR this morning about ukraine’s soldiers getting free sperm storage. It’s so fucked what Russian greed is doing.

  8. Other sources claiming he was not in the jet, he was killed in a strike on an airbase

  9. Maintenance/upkeep is probably the hardest part about use of advanced equipment (advanced being relative). Training, skill sets, parts, quality control, etc. are all necessary elements to develop for new equipment. Any weakness in the means stuff like plane crashes can exist. There is going to be immaturity and a learning curve to all of this.

  10. So… Was it a crash, or a “crash?”

Russia did report that they destroyed an F-16 in an airbase raid with Iskander missiles a few days back, so… Fog of War I guess, we’ll know in time.

  11. While this sucks, Google “F35 crash” and you’ll find that fighter jet training is a risky business, it happens with some regularity.

  12. Looks like 1 year of training an experienced Ukrainian pilot to fly the F-16 is not enough training to transition to the F-16 and perform a basic intercept mission against a non manuevering drone without crashing. New F-16 is $70 million. Cost to train a F-16 pilot is $5 million. Gone in 2 weeks.

  13. They may have shoot it down themself. F16 was lost during the large scale missile attack (100+ targets in air). Considering zoo of different systems of AAD and AF deployed (1960s-200xs), such cases may have been expected, unfortunately.

  14. the fact that the pilot did not survive indicates that the plane was probably shot down, most likely by friendly SAM

  15. Breaking news: fighter jet sent to war zone crashed. No shit? There will be a lot more to come

  16. Multi-million dollar fighter jets don’t just crash. These aren’t commercial Boeing planes.

Ukrainian military command likely doesn’t want to blame the crash on pilot error (since that might dissuade Western countries from providing additional jets), nor do they want to admit that Moonfish was shot down (for the same reason, in addition to being demoralizing since he was something of a public figure and hero to the Ukrainian people). So just calling it a crash is trying to thread the needle

  17. Did the plane crash and kill the pilot or did the pilot crash the plane and kill himself?

  18. Try shot down instead. Rarely do pilots die when it’s an accident. Then they have time to punch out.

  19. All I can say is R.I.P. to the Brave Pilot. It’s not right to lose a good fighter and pilot at the same time and I can only imagine the gut punch the rest of the crew’s and pilots might feel at this tragic news.
