  1. Those are Schrebergärten. (Singular: Schrebergarten)

    Basically garden areas for people in urban areas without access to a garden. You can basically rent a parcel there. They usually come with a small house/shed and there’s quite a culture around them. They‘re also known to have strict rules (think home owner association, like size of trees and bushes, amount of farming area vs recreation area per lot, behavior), you have to cultivate food on your lot and they‘re generally know to attract a peak conservative community.

    Kleingartenkolonien, Schrebergarten, Kleingarten, Datsche, Laubenkolonie

    Those things often have long waiting lists but are for many city dwellers the only opportunity to have their own slice of green.
