I mean it's pretty evident that he just gives up after the ball is shot at him.
Poor positioning, bad form, no clear conscience.

Didn’t he issue a warning just before the season started, that he would be taking even more risks this time?
For an error-prone keeper, bold move
He had a good champions league run with Inter. His problem is that he’s just not a very good shot stopper, so he looks even worse when you consider United’s shocking defence.
Man, De Gea’s desperation is a much better look. It’s difficult seeing Onana just give up. Like, c’mon man, try to get SOMETHING on it.
I don’t understand the video you linked – loads of those goals are obviously not going to be saved by any goalkeeper. What is the expectation – good goalkeepers save every chance?
I don’t think he’s good, and to me he’s just a classic TH signing (player he knows for some reason being bought despite not being the quality needed) but the fact he doesn’t feign a dive to get a ball he knows he can’t get doesn’t really impact that?
This is like the discussion about David James all over again.
I thought he was awful on Sunday. He was out of position for the Diaz goal and even more so for the Salah goal.
It’s okay as he can play out with his feet.
What system?
The changes from DeGea a Goalkeeper with cat-like refrex to Onana a defender with gloves is some of the craziest experience as a united supporter. At the time, not renewing DeGea is the correct decision, he is very obviously on the decline with a very expensive contract. But yeah, in hindsight i wish my goalkeeper can goalkeeping first and foremost, not just watching all the ball rolls into the net with an attitude of “why would my defender do this?”.
When will this so called “ball playing GK” (which i dont even think he’s that good) paying off….
Onana plays in nets like the guy at 7 aside who has had to take his turn in goal. The only thing he can save is anything straight at him and even then it’s a coin flip.
The weirdest thing with Onana is his positioning he makes shots look impossible to save by failing to be 1/2 yards in the correct direction.
He’s decent but in no way world class. De Gea in his worst season is miles better than Onana. The only reason he’s at Utd to begin with is that he played under Ten Haag while at Ajax.
I guess Onana was never really world class and is especially not world class on the line. Bit he can be exceptionally good if the system works in a way to cover his flaws. United in general are really good in asking stuff of people they aren’t really good at making them look really bad, like making maguire and casemiro cover a lot of ground which exposes their lack of mobility. Sometomes I think united just buy players who they can get a decent deal on without much thinking (van de beek) on hownto use them.
He was odd imo.
For Inter he had similar issues and had negative goals conceded but for Champions Leagues he was massive, like seriously impressive in a tough group stage too he had some wild like 75% save rate making him genuinely insane with his distribution. If you’re asking me though United bought him in a rush, they should’ve waited to see how he would turn out another season into Inter.
It was just an odd choice imo because Diogo Costa was also available and well known as an insane keeper with a higher ceiling, but I’m assuming Ten Hag wanted Onana specifically because Andre played at Ajax.
Edit: Just realized you lot had De Gea coming off his golden glove season. Baffles me even more because Onana doesn’t get to distribute much so honestly De Gea might’ve been a better choice for the type of play ManU had at the derby from sunday.
I enjoy him being in the league, it’s always entertaining seeing someone who is obviously very confident in their ability make so many amusing errors.
