  1. Might be?? Ive been working full time for 16 years and still owe on my student debt. Many people i know are unemployed because of recent fluctuations in the economy, a 401k was a luxury, stamped out by the previous generation, the Me Generation, thats what their parents called them and now their greed is wrought.

  2. I think it’s easier, 401k’s didn’t exist when most of our parents were younger. And unlike what reddit thinks pensions were never common and at the highest point only 38% of employees had one.

  3. Gen X: I’ve only had two jobs offer a 401K. Laid off from both in under four years (dot com bubble, great recession) … You can guess how that’s going!

Joined a Union, and now will have a pension… but yeah. No retirement in a first world country for us.

  4. One thing that’s left out of conversations like these is the bad decision people often make related to their personal finances. Credit Card Debt, Living off loans while in College instead of working, impulsive purchases, Buying more house than they can afford, overconsumption, Selling funds when they should be buying, etc, etc, etc…….I don’t want to discount that people are truly struggling. This I know for sure. But I also witness poor and and impulsive decision making constantly which I believe is rooted in low fluency about basic economics.
