As shown by the above video, Raphinha when he was in Leeds was a winger.

He is a kinda winger that is good with space. he struggled very much in his first season, because his 1v1 ability is non-existent and teams usually parked the bus against us. He is skillful and technical with good through balls, so very good player as a creative interior. Overall a technical playmaker-ish kind of winger, but not that creative so he cannot be the main playmaker upfront in the team.

Xavi is right in that he is a winger, but tactically speaking he was very flawed. Raphinha is not Mahrez, but even pep didn't use mahrez against low blocks, that was the job of bernardo silva (xavi's another target). In the end he struggled to use Raphinha as a winger because of the above issues. That is why later on, he used him as a Left Interior, who runs in 'spaces' and scores goal.

Raphinha is tailor made for Hansi Flick as he is intense, aggressive and very good in exploiting spaces.

Lucky enough! i guess. He totally could've been our Antony but we actually figured out how to use him😄

Now, let's see what happens with Frenkie as he is our another player who's position is still not defined all these years especially without a DM.

  1. He didn’t struggle in his first season at all, he’s put up great numbers since arriving, just because now the rest of the team has caught up and we can win games people finally give him the props he deserves, but he was great the entire time.

  2. His run, first touch & finish is tailor-made for over the defence balls from Pedri, Cubarsi & Yamal.

  3. „He could’ve been our Antony“. Never ever compare Raphinha to Antony please. Even in Raphas first Season where he mostly was a pure winger, he had 20 GA. Antony can‘t even dream of that. Raphinha was also so much better in the premier league than Antony, while playing in a worse side. His side nearly got relegated and he still scored 11 goals for them. Antony in his entire time at man united (including all competitions) scored 11 goals.

His passion, mentality and discipline is also something that Antony lacks(tbf most players can‘t even compare to Raphinha in that aspect).

And saying he completely lacks 1v1? He is not the greatest at it, but still better than many other(including Antony).

So even if he was still playing as a pure winger and the manager didn’t adjust to his main skills,he still would be much, much better than Antony.

  4. I am still trying to get better at learning positions but would this mean Raphinha is better utilised as a attacking central midfielder/False Nine?

Lamine Yamal is right wing, and Lewandowski is a striker. Raphinha does not excel as left wing but what would his position be called when being in the field?

  5. I know you mean well, but never ever disrespect Raphinha by comparing him with that Brazilian fidget spinner Antony. Raphinha has more talent on his weak foot than Antony has overall in his entire career. This disrespect on Raphinha need to stop, Barca fans need to give this guy the pr he deserves. Madrid fans out there putting that kid Endrick into R9 comparisons and Barca fans putting Raphinha into Antony comparisons. I mean, what are we doing here people?

  6. Xavis system was very rigid wide wingers played as wide wingers worked in isolation to take on players and raphina is not such a winger

  7. There is no catch. Xavi was just set in his ways to utilize Raphinha as a 1v1 specialist because that was his understanding of a winger in his philosophy.

His wet dream would have been to have Dembele on the right with the qualities he possessed along with a left winger with similar qualities. He wanted a winger that could make a difference and was “distinguished” or create something out of nothing. Look at all of the interviews he talked about Dembele and even including Yamal after Dembele left. Very similar compliments. Why? Because that was what Xavi wanted in a winger and what a winger should bring to his system.

He wanted them wide and waiting for the ball in order to create something on an isolation or 1v1 opportunity. And that’s how he misused Raphinha most of the time; having him wide and waiting for the ball and hoping he could beat his man. Until finally he got knocked some sense into him and started using him more on the inside and making runs behind the defense

Interesting how opponents under both the Xavi and Flick era park the bus and yet Flick utilizes Raphinha very well. So this excuse of Raphinha didn’t shine because the teams park the bus against us here and not against Leeds is honestly bullshit. It’s okay to admit that Xavi misused him at first and finally made some corrections in his final year here.

Flick with his more vertical approach. Appreciates Raphinha for what he is and what he brings and is not insisting on using him as a 1v1 specialist.

  8. Xavi wasn’t right. He tried to force raphinha into playing as a wide winger trying to achieve god knows what while it was very evident from 2022 itself that he’s extremely good at running into vertical spaces. He could have been a huge difference maker last year if we used long balls or vertical through balls against low blocks but xavi was obsessed with his possession based wide winger system that created nothing.

  9. I wanted xavi to continue just because I had no problem with him learning with us and losing,, but if we’re being for real, xavi was very tactically limited and the only reason raphina didn’t shine was because of his rigid slow temp system that relies on waiting for the opponent to get bored and make a mistake. not only raphina but everybody stagnated with xavi.

  10. >because his 1v1 ability is non-existent

It’s pretty messed up that you write this when the link you posted shows him putting people to sleep in 1 v 1 and 1 v many. . . like such a stupid and non evidence-based statement.
