  1. The reality is that it’s a pan-African issue, from the West to the East, North to South. Overall according to stats about [44% of African women experience *violence* at some point in their life](https://www.dw.com/en/abuse-how-african-women-suffer-in-silence/a-62935824) and that’s across the whole continent. Odds are excellent that these are lowball figures. Compare that to other areas which are notably lacking in women’s rights, such as the Arab states [(about 33% of women experiencing violence)](https://arabstates.unwomen.org/sites/default/files/Field%20Office%20Arab%20States/Attachments/Publications/2021/08/VAW_Gender-Sensitive%20Police%20Response_En.pdf), and it’s still shockingly high.

Generally 1 in 3 for women and 1 in 4 for men are the average rates of experiencing violence across the globe, but Africa stands out as a negative exception to the rule.

  2. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/uganda-olympic-runners-horrific-killing-is-the-latest-in-violence-against-female-athletes-in-kenya) reduced by 83%. (I’m a bot)

    > Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei's horrific death after being doused with petrol and set on fire by her boyfriend has again brought to the fore Kenya's harrowing history of domestic violence against female athletes.

    > Her killing follows the deaths of at least two other high-profile female runners in cases of domestic violence in the last three years in a region that has produced dozens of Olympic and world champions.

    > Her body was found with stab wounds to the stomach and neck, as well as blunt trauma injury to her head. In the weeks after Tirop's death, current and former male and female athletes, spoke out over what they said was a long-running problem of domestic abuse against female athletes in the region.
