Was just walking to Gloucester Road station to get the tube to work and saw this, apologies for not getting better photos but I was running last so couldn’t stop properly for a proper gander! Is it a sinkhole?

What did the cops at the end of the road say when you asked them?
Looks like it yes. Could be something as simple as a split in the sewer network that has eroded the ground, although I’d assume if that was the case we would see some water being pushed up, unless maybe its not that full of water.
Only saying that as usually sink holes are caused by water from one source or another
