Wallis, Duchess of Windsor; Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor (King Edward VIII) by Cecil Beaton 1937 and 1949

Edward left England for France immediately after his Abdication speech on 11 December 1936. He and Wallis were married at the Chateau de Candé on 3 June 1937 by a Church of England vicar acting without the authority of his bishop. Cecil Beaton was invited to take photos on the day before the wedding but was not asked to stay at the ceremony itself.

He returned in 1949 to take the last photos in this set

  1. I wonder if it would make sense to give a retrospective bank holiday for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s wedding, since celebrating it was banned back in the day?

It would let bygones be past, and show respect to the late Duke’s memory. Of course a day off work is what we would need to sacrifice today but I’m willing.

  2. I’ve never seen these before. Thanks for sharing. Some show smiles. But others are Sad. Even on their wedding day they don’t look very happy.
