Voices from Sudzha, the Russian town under Ukrainian control | VOANews

The Russian town of Sudzha in Russia’s Kursk region became the biggest town to have been captured by Ukraine’s armed forces on Russian territory.

A VOA reporter was one of the first to visit the city and talk to locals.

Ukraine launched a major cross-border incursion into the Kursk region on August 6, while Russian troops keep pressing towards the strategic hub of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk region is legitimate and covered by Kyiv’s right to self-defense, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told German weekly Welt am Sonntag in his first reaction to the advance into Russian territory.

Russia has called the Kursk operation a “major provocation” and said it would retaliate.

  1. Yes, Ukraine has some advantage. That’s because they are relying on western support. But Russia has the upper hand of cards. Keep playing with them people you never know when they will pull the ace card out.

  2. a century of repression of all kinds, no real freedom of the press, a television entirely in the hands of those in power annihilates any form of expression of the people even if the latter thinks that their government is on the wrong track. once again thank you to the Americans who, despite some delays, are helping the Ukrainians to contain Russian terror as much as possible. memory of the GIs and allied in Normandy.

  3. Russians have lived under tyranny for centuries. Once the Soviet Union fell it was not like the could or would automatically embrace freedom and democracy. It's not a surprise that they reverted to accepting a new form of authoritarianism. Even when Putin loses or dies things will not change.

  4. This is a war of hubris by Putin. He thought he could put the Soviet Humpty Dumpty together again. It was to be the legacy of the next great Russian leader. He underestimated the fact that people, once they have free will, will fight to keep it. I don't know what these women were thinking when talking to VOA because they're risking their lives. Possibly they're getting the one chance to actually speak their mind. Who knows?

  5. And Ukraine is winning Russia is losing. This is how western propaganda works . They don't know that the Ukrainian is in dead trap . No way out no way forward

  6. I hope the last lady manages to stay out of prison once Ukraine returns the territory to ruzzia. At least she's safe from prison, for telling the truth, while Ukraine holds the area.
