[The Athletic] A source close to Boehly’s side described Eghbali as being “obsessed with player trading”. — One person familiar with Clearlake’s thinking disputes this.

  1. Obsessed with Brighton too. They’ve benefited so much it almost feels like an FM cheat when you go two clubs and buy their players for massive money!

  2. Boehly genuinely might be a better owner for Chelsea in the long run than Clearlake and Eghbali.

Yes it didn’t go well for him when he was sporting director but he actually did have the right idea with the players he signed but a lot of them were just past their best. If you partnered him up with a decent sporting director he’d actually do quite well.

  4. I’ve been saying it for about 18 months but what Chelsea are doing doesn’t make any sense from a competitive or sporting perspective.

Their approach has hampered Chelsea’s performance on the pitch and is continuing to hold them back.

The fact that this summer they again signed an unnecessary amount of players tells me this isn’t about football, it’s about trying to flip players on the transfer market to make money.

They’re hoping that by hoarding loads of young talent they will make loads of money in a few years because young players’ values tend to appreciate.

The obvious problem with that is that young players in functional football clubs gain value. Young players who are sat on the bench every week or who have been farmed out on poorly-planned loans to weaker clubs in less competitive leagues don’t appreciate in value.

Add to that the fact that most of these young players are signing for Chelsea because no one else will match the wages Chelsea are offering, this looks like a recipe for disaster and had Chelsea not cheated FFP rules by selling hotels to themselves they’d already be looking at a significant points deduction.

This is nothing but a lazy, get rich quick scheme and Chelsea are trying to cut every corner possible. They’re like those people who think that by joining a fancy gym, getting some designer trackies and an expensive PT they can get in shape for their holiday in three weeks after months of overeating and not exercising.

  5. I’m waiting for the Spotify ad in a few years’ time: “If you were signed by Chelsea in the tax years 2022-2025, you may be entitled to compensation.”
